Did anyone go last night?
If so, how did we get on?
I checked on Chris Phillips twitter as well as southend united's and Aveley's sites, but no mention of the result from anyone.

I don’t know the result but I have been able to glean that this was a friendly between Aveley U18s and principally our new scholars (so Blues U16s).

For those that are interested, the U18s are at home before both our next two home first-team matches. On Saturday we host Stevenage and on 30th March we welcome current Merit League table-toppers Northampton Town. Kick-off is advertised as 11:00am but against Stevenage we often kick-off at 10:30am, so my advice is to get there early!

For those who haven’t visited Boots & Laces before, the U18s usually play on the second pitch down (the first pitch is the first-team training pitch and U23s match pitch). Due to a couple of incidents where spectators were hit by balls from an adjoining pitch, viewing is from behind the goals only. At the last home fixture this was further restricted to just behind the goal at the ‘Waitrose end’.

Midfielder Sam Brogan was delighted to help Southend United’s under-18 side return to winning ways with a 2-1 Boots & Laces success against Stevenage.

Well done lads :Thumbs up:

Strange to see Bournemouth down there. You would have thought they would have invested in youth heavily.

Is there a promotion at youth level?

There’s no promotion, the academies are split into categories according to facilities, staffing levels and amount of coaching hours you can offer.

The more you invest the more coaching hours you can offer the better your facilities you have.....the better category you are awarded.

It’s geared towards the best clubs with the best facilities being able to offer the best players the most coaching by the best coaches....

Southend are Caragory 3. Most championship clubs are category 2 (20 best academies) - Colchester are the only league 2 club to offer cat 2 academy.
Most of the Prem are obviously Cat 1 (24 best academies in the country).

Whethe it works or not is debatable with it meant to be in her interests of improving the best players the quickest....

The difference from cat 2 to cat 3 is enormous....and the different from cat 1 to cat 2 staggering.....the problem is though that the cat 1 players have little or no pathway to first team football....

Arguably the evidence is now that it is working as the best of the best are getting through (Hudson Odoi/Sancho/Foden). However league 1 is still where the cat 1 clubs send their best talent for league experience....Sterling is at Coventry, Nya Kirby is at Blackpool etc etc

The difference being though is that they (the lads that come to league 1 on loan from Prem) play most games....the league 1 clubs trust them becuase of where they have come from.
