Latest Rumours Summer Transfer Window Thread 2020

Memories of Barry Fry nicking all those decent players from Barnet. Would be good if the outcome was similar.

In the end I think he only signed 4 from Barnet: Derek Payne, Micky Bodley, David Howell and Jonathan Hunt and they had limited impact. Bodley (65 games) was the only one to have played more than 50 times. We did get a decent sized fee for the underused Hunt though.

What transformed the side was the money from the Collymore sale which allowed is to sign Otto from Orient, Lee from Lincoln and Mooney from Scarborough.

Also from Fry’s Barnet there was Ed Stein-assistant manager-and Gary Poole-via one season at Plymouth

It tells you something when the summer transfer thread is on the 2nd page of SZ!

I know everything is up in the air at the moment but do we think that Osadebe and Vassell are still at the club? Will they be registered if/when the embargo is lifted? They were Sol targets but do you think they are still being included within the team and will be training next week?

Really not getting anything from the club about pre-season or anything at the moment.

On Osadebe and Vassell you would have thought the contract if signed was 18 months with an option. Did Vassall ever sign? We heard nothing? Osedebe may have done but we have heard nothing. Not aware of either player signing elsewhere?

We need a manager to be signing people. And first a decision on who will be going. We can have a positive window based on keeping a number of players that maybe we assume (without evidence at this point) will go.

So it will be mid Aug before we should be very worried by lack of activity- bearing in mind we may be able to sign not register anyone up till a certain time (this might mean we make signings that we don't announce adding to our angst!!)

Think it would be a tremendous boost to confirm the two signings of those two for the squad. Two experienced Lg2 players, just depends how much they wanted to play for Sol - which you'd think was pretty high how the events panned out.

Not sure the budget will be going on any defenders. We already have Lennon, Kyprianou, White, Bwomono, Ralph, Clifford, Demetriou, possibly Vassell.

Two experienced central midfielders and, assuming McLaughlin is off, a couple of wingers are far more necessary. And we'll also need a new striker or two.

All in all, this squad is horrendously unbalanced and it's going to take more than one transfer window to sort it out.

Which is exactly why anything above a 22nd place finish is a huge success!

The defence is shockingly light IMO.

A back three of White, Dieng & Lennon is the stuff of nightmares. We need at least one dominant centre half who can marshal the back line.

In Midfield we’re desperate for a destroyer, someone who can do the dirty work, and feed the creative players. Someone in the Deegan mould, but better.

Up top worries me. If it’s Goodship & Kelman, then they’ll need the ball on the floor, and plenty of support from the midfield. Lg2 CB’s will mop them up if we constantly resort to route one football.

That's assuming no outs though. It wouldn't be that much of a surprise if, say, Bwomono and Demetriou were to both leave.

A lot also depends on how the new manager wants to set up. He may not even want to play with wingers.

But I agree the balance of the squad is off. Even more than experience (at least Oxley, White, Dieng and Demetriou have that) the squad also needs more athletes. We basically have next to no players with pace or power (particularly if Humphrys leaves as expected) and we lack height/aerial ability.

Assuming all the above stay, I think Demi is best deployed in centre midfield. With Lennon and White (more recently) never too far away from their next injury, we desperately need defenders.

Kyprianou is another defender who has been hit hard by the injury bug.

With Demetriou we also need to consider how often he can play. The late start is unlikely to help in that regard as it will presumably mean more midweek fixtures.

Yep, all relevant points. I hope Ron and the next manager have serious discussions on whether to cut our losses on the injury prone players and those who’s game time has to be carefully managed, and invest in players with a sound fitness record. Of course this is not insurance policy against future player injuries but is surely best practice and a more suitable operating model for a L2 team, in limited finances.

We need it, yes. We won't get it though. The defence is a low priority area because we have numbers. The budget only goes so far.
