The Stadium of Light is ready for action at 3.00pm Saturday 2nd November 2019, it looks like we are going to have a gloomy overcast afternoon with some heavy rain for the game, and there will be a gentle breeze from the North. It will feel cold, wet, and miserable, so make sure you wrap up well. (Recommend you keep your Yellow/Blue Southend United shirt covered up until in Stadium).

Phil Parkinson talks to Sunderland’s OS before the game against Southend United

Phil Parkinson.jpg
Phil Parkinson Sunderland’s Manager

Phil Parkinson has demanded his players must produce a high-octane performance this weekend when Southend United come to town.

Sunderland return to the Stadium of Light on Saturday, kick-of 3pm, in search of three vital points as they look to climb the League One table.

The Black Cats produced a ruthless 5-0 display in their last home game against Tranmere Rovers, but have since struggled to convert their chances which has resulted in defeats at Shrewsbury Town and Oxford United.

With Sol Campbell’s Southend on the horizon, Parkinson has admitted his side must play take a high-octane approach if they are to pick apart The Shrimpers on Saturday.

“We have got to keep improving on the service our front players get,” he said.

“If we do that then we have the players who will get us the goals as we showed against Tranmere.

“It’s about creating an intensity to our game. When you look at the Tranmere match, we know they would try and slow the game down like Southend will tomorrow.

"It's up to us to counteract that. We have got to play at a real pace with and without the ball.

He continued: “Can we move the ball quickly? When we lose it can we win it back quickly?

“We have got to really try our best to speed the game up tomorrow and if we do that then the fans will give us the same backing we had against Tranmere.”

Sol Campbell Southend United’s new Manager talks to OS before travelling to Sunderland

Sol Campbell OS.jpg
Sol Campbell Southend United’s New Manager

Sol Campbell says his Blues players have made “good strides” having completed his first full week of training ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Campbell only had two days with the boys before last Saturday’s defeat to Ipswich, but this week the Southend boss has had more of a chance to assess and get his message across to his new side.

And Campbell is well aware of the task at hand tomorrow afternoon against a Sunderland side who are desperately chasing promotion back to the Championship.

“For us, it’s a big game. It’s going to be a big crowd over there and a big pitch. They’ve got fantastic history Sunderland so we’ve got to be at it, compact and ready to go.

“Getting the lads for a whole week has been great for me, we’ve had a nice little block of training which is very important for us to get our message across so it’s very important for us. It’s only been just over a week, but we’ve made some really good strides and that’s key. We’ve done a little bit of fitness work, a bit of technical work, so hopefully, it’ll all start paying off in the games.

“I’m confident in the sense that we can put a good shift in and a good performance. The main thing for us is the performance and everybody has to buy in and step up and put a little bit more energy into it, but also a bit more thought as well. I want them to express themselves, but I also want them to be canny when they’re defending and making sure they’re tight as a unit.”

Southend fans will have fond memories of the last meeting between these two with Stephen Humphrys’ late goal on the final day of last season, saving Blues from relegation to League Two.

The Black Cats though won the reverse fixture 3-0 at the Stadium of Light a little over a year ago and so far this season Phil Parkinson’s side have yet to taste defeat at home in the league.

Campbell played a number of times at the Stadium of Light and knows what it takes to get a win there, but he said he’s under “no illusions” that tomorrow will be an easy ride.

“They’re a big side, they’ve got a huge budget and we’ve got to be at it from minute one. We’re under no illusions that it’s going to be an easy game, but the main thing for us is as long as we get our set up right and we can impose ourselves on the game and we take our chances or give them problems, that’s the main thing for us.

“We’ve got to go out there and enjoy the game, work hard and not be overawed by the stadium. Just play our game, back each other up on the pitch and play some football. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but we’ve made some good strides and as long as the guys are focused, we’ll be alright."

Sol Campbell boosted by first full week as Southend United prepare to face Sunderland

Pleased - Southend United manager Sol Campbell

Southend United boss Sol Campbell has been boosted by his first full week training the Shrimpers.

Blues face a tough looking test at Sunderland tomorrow.

But Campbell feels his side have prepared well for the clash “Getting the lads for a whole week has been great for me,” said Campbell.

“We’ve had a nice little block of training which is very important for us to get our message across.

“It’s only been just over a week but we’ve made some really good strides and that’s key.

“We’ve done a little bit of fitness work and a bit of technical work so hopefully it will all start paying off in the games.”

Blues were beaten 3-1 by Ipswich Town in Campbell’s first game in charge on Saturday.

But the former England international is hopeful the Shrimpers can produce an improved performance.

“I’m confident in the sense that we can put a good shift in and a good performance,” said Campbell.

“The main thing for us is the performance and everybody has to buy in, step up and put a little bit more energy into it but also a bit more thought as well.

“I want them to express themselves but I also want them to be canny when they’re defending and making sure they’re tight as a unit.”

However, Campbell is fully aware how tough Sunderland will be to beat.

“They’re a big side, they’ve got a huge budget and we’ve got to be at it from minute one,” said Campbell.

“We’re under no illusions that it’s going to be an easy game but the main thing for us is to set up right so we can impose ourselves on the game and that we take our chances or give them problems.

“We’ve got to go out there and enjoy the game, work hard and not be overawed by the stadium.

“Just play our game, back each other up on the pitch and play some football.

“Rome wasn’t built in a day, but we’ve made some good strides and as long as the guys are focused, we’ll be alright."

The Big Preview

Sunderland vs Southend United

Sunderland v SUFC Pre View.jpg
Overview

Southend United begin a run of three successive away league matches with a trip to the Stadium of Light as they take on Sunderland tomorrow afternoon.

Blues fans will remember fondly the last time these two sides met, as Southend beat the Black Cats on a dramatic final day to secure their League One survival.

And Sol Campbell will hope to invoke memories from that afternoon in May as Blues look for just their second league win of the season and their first under their new boss.

Form

Blues are without a win in their last six league matches, picking up just one point from the last 18 available with a draw against Tranmere a fortnight ago.

Southend were blown away by Doncaster before showing an improved performance in Sol Campbell’s first game against Ipswich, although Blues were still beaten 3-1.

Sunderland haven’t had it all their own way recently with two wins and one draw from their last six in the league and in midweek they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Oxford on penalties.

Last Meeting

Saturday 4th May 2019

Southend United 2-1 Sunderland

White 43’, Humphrys 87’; Maguire (p)75’

I’m sure Blues fans won’t need reminding about the last time these two sides met as Stephen Humphrys’ late strike secured Southend the win they needed to earn League One survival.

In a must-win game for the home side, John White put Southend in front before Chris Maguire’s penalty levelled matters, only for Humphrys to score in the dying minutes to save Blues.

Blues Team News

Harry Lennon returns from suspension to bolster Blues’ defensive options having missed last weekend’s defeat to Ipswich thanks to a one-match ban.

Stephen McLaughlin and Ethan Hamilton, however, remain suspended as they continue to serve out their three-game bans for red cards picked up against Doncaster Rovers.

Mark Milligan will be assessed after picking up an ankle knock in training this week while Stephen Humphrys is out for around three weeks with a thigh injury.

Sunderland Dangerman

Chris Maguire, the midfield man that those on Wearside refer to as ‘The King’, is arguably the one to watch tomorrow having notched five times already this season to be Sunderland’s joint top scorer.

Maguire scored nine times last season, including goals both home and away against Blues, and he’s already well on his way to eclipsing that number this time around.

The 30-year-old has scored some spectacular goals in the past and, worryingly for Southend, all five of his strikes this season have come at home in wins against Portsmouth, Wimbledon and Tranmere.

Ref Watch

Trevor Kettle will be the man in charge tomorrow afternoon at the Stadium of Light, assisted by Stephen Wade and Ian Dudley, while Garreth Rhodes acts as the fourth official.

This’ll be the second time this season that Kettle has taken charge of Blues, having officiated Southend’s 2-0 defeat to Brighton’s u21s in the Leasing.com Trophy a month ago.

Kettle so far this season has refereed 12 games, showing 37 yellow cards and four reds, and most recently oversaw Bolton’s 2-0 win away at Bristol Rovers.

Away Fans Guide

Sunderland’s Stadium of Light is by far and away the biggest and most impressive ground Southend fans will visit in League One, with the stadium having a capacity of almost 50,000.

Those fans travelling tomorrow will find themselves in the upper tier of the North Stand with visiting teams typically being given an allocation of around 3,000 tickets.

For more information on the ground, including info on travel directions, where to park and where to go for a pre-match drink, check out awaygames.co.uk’s guide by clicking here.

Tickets

Pre-Sale tickets for tomorrow’s clash came off sale yesterday (Thursday 31st October) but tickets will still be available to purchase at the Stadium of Light on matchday.

Those looking to purchase tickets on the day of the game, please be aware that it is cash only and tickets can be bought directly at turnstile 71.

For those hoping to get concessions tickets, this will be cash only also and you will need to visit the Sunderland Ticket Office which is located in a separate building adjacent to the East Stand.

Will Grigg, Max Power and Aiden McGeady all top championship level players! How they didn’t get promoted with that team last season is baffling.

Pleased to see Goodship playing, really hope he kicks on and is allowed to play up top.

Oxley dropped. Glad Campbell has worked Oxley out quickly

Bold statement to bring Bishop back after leaking 7 in his last outing. That can’t be good for his confidence even if he wasn’t at fault for all of the goals. Against Sunderland who have an impressive team too.

Was hardly Bishops fault. Whereas Oxley was at fault for 2 goals last week

I'm surprised that Campbell has gone for 3412 in both his games. seems a strange one, and bold for Sunderland away. now, let's smash these northern monkeys

Other than his statue moment I thought Oxley didn’t do as bad as everyone made out against Ipswich.
