Supporters Group News Update from last nights meeting. 30/01/23

Far more likely than liquidation would be administration which would require a purchaser to be found quickly. That would be a preferred outcome for all but a very tiny minority. Hopefully that is even more of a focus and would require identifying potential backers (notwithstanding the idea there are a few waiting in the wings?)

Concerned - Southend United supporters (Image: Focus Images)

SOUTHEND United supporters have started to explore the possibility of starting a phoenix club amid fears for the future of the Shrimpers.
Blues have until the start of March to pay off a large tax bill following a winding up petition from HMRC while the club’s office staff are still waiting to receive wages for both December and January.
Staff – who have not been paid since November – had been due to receive January’s pay packets today but at the time of writing it has not been received.

And concerned supporters are now taking matters into their own hands.
A statement issued by the supporters groups of Southend United confirmed: “In line with contingency planning for possible liquidation of the club, a working group has been established to begin urgent exploratory work around the possibility of establishing a phoenix club to take the place of Southend United within the National League System.
“We recognise that this is an emotive subject and it is not a decision that we have taken lightly.
“The thought of Southend United as we know it ending does not bear thinking about.
“However, in the absence of any official evidence-based messages of reassurance coming out of the club, now is the time to stop treating the subject of a phoenix club as taboo. “We would be doing the club and the fanbase a disservice by not preparing fully for such an eventuality.”
The supporters met via Zoom on Monday evening and again urged chairman Ron Martin to relinquish some of his shares to ensure the club can be saved.
The statement added: “The groups remain united in their belief that club owner Ron Martin is not the right person to take Southend United forwards in the medium or long-term. “We reiterate our strong collective opinion that, should he continue in the role for the time being, he should seriously consider outside investment to help overcome the club’s immediate financial difficulties and progress the Fossetts Farm stadium project.
“Last week we declared our concern that, come 1st March 2023, we may no longer have a football club to support.
“Knowing how important Southend United is to us all, and to the local community as a whole, we cannot allow that to happen. “

It's not looking good.

Why should that be a focus any more than preparing for liquidation? Regardless of what anybody believes is likely, until anything official comes out of the club to the contrary, both outcomes remain a possibility. Can't both be prepared for? Preparing for liquidation doesn't mean anyone involved wants it, but people need to stop burying heads in the sand, accept that it's a possibility and stand ready for it. We lose nothing by doing so. Any confidence that administration proceedings would develop in our favour are unfounded - in reality we'd have barely more influence over those than we would liquidation procedings.

Not sure what I was expecting but that statement is basically just say everything everyone already knows.

Would be nice to know who all these people who were interested in buying the club have disappeared to. Surely now is the time to come out in the paper make it known they want the club and could even offer RM thr loan as part of the deal.

"Office staff have not been paid January's wages today" - CP

So that's them behind with December and now January. What a sorry mess.
Can't say I'm not surprised. I'm more surprised that players have been paid to be fair.

That statement is a bit like the last one from Ron. Lots of words, little substance. So you are going to meet weekly and look at establishing a phoenix club. What else was discussed in a meeting I understand lasted nearly 2 hours? Its all very well saying its sensitive but again it goes to show how closed off these supporters groups are to the wider fan base. The sensitive part is also a load of ****ing bollocks on the basis you arent a company, dont have any NDAs in place and are simply supporters groups meeting. The wider fan base you "apparently" represent deserve to know what is being discussed in much more detail that what has come out so far.

Sums up my initial thoughts regarding the statement perfectly.

For the record, I think this is the right thing to do. Have a pheonix club ready just in case SUFC goes belly up. An agreement to play as AFC Southend groundsharing with Southend Manor in the Essex Senior League is exactly what is needed at the moment. If the new phoenix club isn't needed, then that's great news, but we need to be ready.

Well done the supporters trust.

What more do you want. It appears to me to be direct and to the point.
