Teacher sacked for taking kids sledging

I would guess the last sentence of that passage gives away the key to the decision made. On the grounds of what the article says, I still find it incredibly harsh. There's duty of care and health and safety gone mad - this definitely leans towards the later.
 
I thought it was a mental decision at first, but agree the last line indicates this chap was a bit of a liability!
 
I had visions of him standing at the front of the class holding a cricket bat whilst the whole class said rude things about his Mum and his wife and he just took it.
 
Scrap that, according to what I heard today his previous 'failings' were that he hadn't enforced the school rule of no students on the snowy banks of grass around school.

If every teacher who didn't enforce all the rules every time was given 'form' we'd all be in trouble!

However, he didn't admit to the 'offence' at first, which can't help his cause.
