Chaps, I am in agony at present. I have a feeling one of my upper wisdom teeth is going to need extraction, due to possible infection/abcess

Now the problem is I haven't been to the dentist in ages (I know, I know) but I've had no need to....until now.

Christ, I dont even remember where I used to go.

So:

Can you just register with anybody?
Can you get any extractions done on the NHS these days? How?
Can anyone recommend a Southend area surgery for me?

I think I need to see someone fairly quick as the pain is getting slowly worse each day. Now, being a self-employed person, with a gigantic tax bill due at the end of this month. Forking out hundreds of quid to put it right, is really the last resort at the moment.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I think you can register with anyone, trouble is most NHS dentists are at capacity. You may be lucky.

And it ain't that cheap on the NHS either mate.

Ok, so my next question. Where is the nearest NHS dentist in Southend?!

Any ideas on how much these types of surgery cost?

:'(

You're charged for a course of treatment, so if you just need a tooth out then it'll be £47, even if that means 1 or 2 appointments. Go on NHS Choices, stick your postcode in and find a dentist who is taking on NHS patients. If it's an emergency, then look for an emergency NHS dentist where they'll give you emergency treatment.

Then make sure you stay signed up and make sure you go to your checkups!

i paid £32 allbeit that was last year, dont think prices have gone through the roof yet, most surgerys will take you
on under the NHS thefore they have to work to a price structure
good luck Smiffy

Thanks everyone.

Another silly question. But when you ring up do you have to say you want an appointment under the NHS?

Also, if and when the dentist tells me I need work done will he always try and offer you a private job, rather than doing it under the NHS? Thus trying to charge me £400 instead of around £50?!

Or is it if they accept NHS patients, they dont do private work?

Sorry for the questions, just not sure how it all works these days!

you will have to register with a surgary as an NHS patient then any work carried out will be under NHS
there are some exceptions for some work for vanity reasons but certainly not for wisdom extraction

Lee, a lot of dentists have extended their NHS capacity so I'd try ringing a few. I know a lot of people who use the practice in Crowstone Road. I think there are 3 tiers of payment as outlined below:

  • Band 1: £17 includes an examination, diagnosis and advice. If necessary, it also includes X-rays, a scale and polish and planning for further treatment.
  • Band 2: £47 includes all treatment covered by Band 1, plus additional treatment, such as fillings, root canal treatment and removing teeth (extractions).
  • Band 3: £204 includes all treatment covered by Bands 1 and 2, plus more complex procedures, such as crowns, dentures and bridges.

You can't pay any more then 200 odd pound funny enough I am having 4 fillings and a tooth out tomorrow at crowstone dental place off London road next to the trading rooms pub and I live in hockley!

Alternatively Lee, if you are struggling to find a dentist contact the Local PCT who will have alist etc. For your area that would be South East essex PCT and they are based at Suffolk House, Baxter Avenue. Sorry do not have the number to hand but if need be go onto the website.
If the gums are inflammed/infected they will do not any work until the infection is cleared and it is pointless going to A&E as they will only re-direct you to find a dentist

Get it sorted well worth the money whatever the cost and will save you a possible huge future bill or worse false teeth.
