What a good game last night and, to top it off, Terry Gray was at the game looking very fit and well.

We spoke about the famous 'food poisoning' back in 1979 and I hadn't realised just how bad it was.

Terry told me that the chicken they had been given was actually contaminated with salmonella and a lot of the team were very badly ill. Terry said that he was actually unconscious as a result.

He attributed the relegation absolutely directly to the food poisoning and said that most of the team really struggled in games from about the 75th minute because the illness had been so debilitating and the effects lasted for nearly a year.

The reason they had the promotion season was because they all stuck together and were actually fit the following year.......and Derek Spence's goals of course.

He said that Dave Smith was a super intelligent manager and the reason he left to go back north was because his son had started to speak what Terry thought was cockney.

A real gentleman, who spoke very well of his time at the Blues.

Great stuff.

Bit of an unsung hero in that promotion side, but scored a fair number of goals.

He was ever present in 80/81 and scored 17 goals that season, mainly from the right flank. He lost his place in the side in March 82 to Steve Phillips after finding goals a bit harder to come by and signed for Bradford City in August 82. He was a clever footballer.

Thought Dave Smith left us to manage Plymouth? That's certainly where he ended up.
