Funnily enough, Dublin was player of the season before Martin.

Before Martin took over, Whelan released Tilly who was due a testimonial

Sansome left, as did Sussex, Hanlon and Lapper.

Two of his Martin's signings left soon after they signed - Parris and Beeston. Beeston played 8 games, Parris only one.

Other new signings were: N Jones, Ben Lewis;

Youngsters offered pro deals: Trevor Fitzpatrick and Chris Perkins

Adrian Clarke was also signed permanently after impressing in loan in 96/7 season

Martin also loaned Martin Allen; and gave a trial to N'Zamba who played for 12 minutes

Then he signed Coubault and N'Diaye...

And loaned Big Neville Southall.

Then he signed Coleman and Maher.

And loaned Richard Jobson and Martin Aldridge.

16 new players!

The next season Royce went to Charlton, Boere went to Japan, Thomson to Oxford, Rammell to Walsall, Grids to Woking, Lewis to Heybridge, Nielsen to Viborg, and Regis and Pepe ****ed back to France.

Then he signed 3 cracking players - Conlon for 90k, Morley for 10k and Margetson for free. Burns, Gooding and Newman came on frees. Also joining were Livett, Capleton and de Souza.

Mick Gooding broke a record for oldest debutant this season.

Then he loaned Kevin Rapley who was decent enough.

In January, Martin signed Booty for free and Barry Hunter on loan. He also bought Campbell for £12,500 and Roach for £30k. Unger also came on a free. He then signed McGavin on a free in February 1999

Not long after, he was sacked.

Beard was player of the season. Top scorer was Newman with 8, Conlon 2nd with 7.

So, he paid £142,500. And bought or signed 23 players and loaned 6

Did Alvin Martin ever get another Managers job after Southend? I think not and any prospective employer looking at that will say no thanks or words to that effect.
