The demise of The Guardian International

You travel first class I take it?:unsure:The FCG(overground light railway service)between SC and Barcelona used to offer second class and third class tickets(no first class- a very Spanish compromise).I always used to get a second class season ticket.Sadly it's now a classless, one price service.
Yes - the little slice of fruitcake and bag of peanuts from the trolley makes it worthwhile

as a non nob munching public sector worker let us hope you don't get ill and need a hospital, don't set your house on fire and need a fire engine, don't breed so you have no need of the education system, don't get robbbed and need a policeman - the list is endless. meanwhile i'm a bit confused by your comments as you seem to think i'm a nob muncher for working for the public sector but are quite happy for the private sector to shaft me if i worked in it. keep sending the kids up chimneys and down mines. i thought neandethals had all died out, seems some survived to evolve into d i c k heads
I'm sorry nob muncher - didn't you realise that healthcare can be looked after by BUPA, education by private schools, and robbers by baseball bats. As for being shafted by the private sector - depends on your definition of being shafted. You'd probably have far more opportunity in the private sector. And you wouldn't have to munch nobs.

health care and private education - doctors, nurses and teachers all trained by the public sector. baseball bats provided by sweated labour overseas cos the private sector would much rather exploit cheap labour with no protection than provide a decent wage to produce a quality product

if the bat hits the object, it's a quality product.

Another great quote, from Reagan:

Welfare's purpose should be to eliminate, as far as possible, the need for its own existence.

Reagan had some wise words about the public sector too:

The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'

Enfield, C is paying your wages through taxes and yet you aren't answerable to him. Let him pay again through BUPA and private schools and his top of the range baseball bat if he wants to think he is getting something superior. As long as he still pays for my kids to see doctors and have an education and have a policeman to ask directions I'm happy. I'm happier still that he doesn't want to pay for that by still does. No one pays for first class trains either except him, I can just see his face everytime he is on a train glancing round all indignant knowing that he is in the same place as the plebs yet he is the only one who has paid double. Take pride from the fact that everytime that your wages hit your bank account it makes C a little bit more upset. Bless him and his warped outlook of the world - he'll give himself an ulcer (and thats still gonna hurt even in a BUPA hospital).

another reason to look forward to pay day

But for all you know he might well be able to afford it 10 times over so it probably doesn't really bother him. And if he is paying for your kids to see a Doctor I suppose it makes you immensely proud that you have to ponce from others. And when he gets his ulcer it may well hurt but at least the BUPA Hospital will have it treated quickly while you are still on the waiting list waiting for someone to pay for you.
Sometimes jealousy comes over as a terrible thing.

Jealousy has nothing to do with it.The NHS was founded to give a decent standard of healthcare to everyone whatever their means.
(I'm a diabetic but I'd sooner drop dead than pay for private treatment. In any case no private medical scheme would accept me as a patient once I'd declared my condition).

Wow, your more seriously twisted than I first imagined. I just hope to God your never actually in that situation where you have to choose because if your serious you need help my friend, and not the kind a mate can give!

Clearly it does bother him or he wouldn't keep banging on about the public sector and first class travel. I'm not jealous, I am very happy with my lot. I know nothing of how much C earns or has achieved in his profession and its pretty irrelevant to me but he seems intent on pointing out how he likes to distance himself from society as a whole and wants to brag that finance allows him to do that. NHS isn't poncing off others - it comes from the taxes that we all pay, its the law to pay, its not a choice. It should make him proud that he contributes to the cost of my kids going to see a doctor but seems he doesn't think that way. The fact that he may not want to do that but has to does make me smile, but I'm generally really happy anyway and tonight we are going top of the league. I'm a team player and he is Carlos Tevez. I'm group hug and he is nasty smug.

I don't believe C wants to distance himself from society, I believe he wants to distance himself from socialism, and having to share the fruits of his labours with feckless loafers.

Your last sentence is very telling, and shows the mindset of the left. You think you are being a 'team player' by subscribing to a system of nanny-statism that has shown itself to be unsustainable (look no further than Greece, Portugal - Northern and Central Europe will soon be following suit), but it's your ideas that will destroy Great Britain FC in the same way that the actions of Tevez are paving Manchester City's road to ruin. The real team players are blokes like C who are embracing the private sector entrepeneurial spirit which is our only way out of this mess.

Entrepreneurial spirit is a great thing but it ultimately relies on the masses to do the donkey work and needs a healthy (NHS), educated (state education) and safe (police, fire brigade, bin men to save us from rats) populace to be able to do the work for those with money making schemes. C is just out for himself, he is Carlos Tevez and I wouldn't p~ss on him if he was on fire - and if it wasn't for us all, together, collectively paying for the fire brigade then with me unwilling to donate my p~ss he would just burn. Bit OTT but I'm all excited as tonight we go top of the league.

Healthy and educated doesn't necessarily have to equal NHS and state education. Private healthcare is increasingly offered by (private sectors) employers and state funded education generally does little to prepare people for work. You'd like to think that it would provide basic literacy and numeracy, but sadly even that often seems to be a little optimistic.

but the vast majority of people do not have access to the private sector options and as much as some people would prefer to pay for only what they use if there wasn't a basic standard of health and education provided then the have nots would become a dangerous underclass. For most the state options are the only options and from my experience I've never felt the need to look beyond that despite having 3 children so I am a constant user of these services. Its accident of birth that says that if my children needed private I could find the money to do that but if I couldn't and there was no state option then they would be denied the basic tools to give them the opportunity to make of their lives what they can. I can see no logic in any arguments that would deny someone from birth a health service and an education regardless of their parents' financial position. As a country we invest in those that will be the next generation of workers and though we can debate how well those services are run the fact the vast majority of people are happy to invest in that makes me proud to be British. Well done us for being generally f~cking ace in our attitude towards each other and long may we continue to give each and everyone of us the basic resources to use and flourish or to squander - at least we've all had a chance.
