LAST GASP GOWER MAKES A POINT

Mark Gower was the stoppage time hero as he lashed home the 6th and equalising goal of a pulsating thriller under the lights at Roots Hall.

This is a game that will live long in the memory of the 11000-plus fans who were fortunate enough to witness the 100 mph football dished up by both teams.  Norwich set out their stall early and played some decent keep ball in the opening stages as Southend struggled to settle.  Too often passes were rushed or played long and it was the visitors who had all the early possession.

But after 9 minutes, a long ball from Barrett over the top found top scorer Freddy Eastwood in space and a sublime first touch lifted the ball over the defenders head to give himself a clear shot at goal 15 yards out.  Freddy rarely misses those and this was no exception.  1-0.

The packed Norwich contingent was stunned into silence as Southend worked hard to stop the visitors playing football and for 25 minutes it worked.  Despite lots of possession, Norwich just could not find a way through and resorted to long range efforts that didn't trouble Flahavan.

Then after 36 minutes, Southend entered a period of play that will hopefully never be repeated at this level.  Guttridge gave the ball away and ball watched as his midfield counterpart set up an attack.  The ball was switched to wide on the right, and a deep cross eluded everyone except the onrushing Earnshaw, who put the ball in at the second attempt following a fine save by Darryl.

Four minutes later Norwich pulled Blues apart with a superb move featuring some great one touch football.  As the ball came into the Southend box, there seemed 2 or 3 opportunities to clear the ball but the penalty area resembled a bagatelle board as the ball again fell to Earnshaw who put the Canaries 2-1 ahead.

At this point Southend's play was sloppy and was by far the worst quality that has been dished up for some time.  Gower, Guttridge, Clarke and Campbell-Ryce were not on their game with several players failing to do the simple things and then arguing with each other.  Freddy's opener had been our only shot of the match and one could only hope that a half time tongue lashing from Tilly would galvanise the team into action.

Unfortunately, any such hopes were dashed within 2 minutes of the restart as a poor lay off by Freddy gifted possession to Norwich who all too easily sliced through the defence to set up a cross for Etuhu to head in from close range.   At 3-1 to be honest, most people thought it was “game over”.  Southend and Norwich looked 2 divisions apart, with the rapid rise up the divisions looking finally to have caught up with us.  It seemed a case of how many the Norfolk outfit would win by.

I had feared the worst at half time and had received a text from my friend in the South Upper who predicted 3-3.  At this point I said we’d do well to keep them at 3 and he simply replied that I should keep the faith and he reaffirmed his 3-3 prediction.  What a good call that turned out to be.

After two and a half seasons of Southend having most things go their way, this situation would provide Steve Tilson with his greatest test so far.  He has faced criticism from various quarters concerning the timing of his substitutions in the past and with several Blues players not firing on all cylinders, surely a substitution needed to be made sooner rather than later.

Tilly surprised everyone again.  With 64 minutes gone, he made not one, not two but three changes.  Off came the woeful Guttridge, the knackered Campbell-Ryce and the ineffective Paynter, to be replaced by Hunt, Hooper and Harrold respectively.

Immediately the awkward Harrold posed the Norwich defence problems and won a corner.  There was an effective 4th substitution as the crowd found their voice and really started to lift the players.  The Roots Hall Roar returned with a vengeance as all sides of the ground raised the roof and the spirits of the home side.

The visiting fans were silenced and nervous as Blues began to dominate.  Clarke headed over from a corner and Maher had a rasping drive tipped over by the keeper.  Then, Hooper won a free kick on the edge of the box.  A perfect training ground routine saw Freddy dummy to shoot and Hammell strode up instead to fire the ball into the top right hand corner.  2-3.

With 20 minutes left there seemed every chance that an equaliser would come.  Shots rained in on the Norwich goal, with one effort being blocked by the arms of a defender but claims for a penalty were waved aside.  The visitors had nothing left to offer as Southend turned the screw but despite their possession and dominance, the equaliser seemed elusive.

As 3 minutes of injury time arrived, Worthington made a substitution and the Canaries made every effort to slow the game down.  Then, with a minute left, Earnshaw found himself clear in the box but lifted the ball over the bar.

That miss proved costly as Southend mounted one last attack.  Freddy received the ball wide and fired a shot goalwards.  The keeper pushed the ball  out and Gower stopped it, turned and rifled home from 6 yards to raise the roof yet again and seal a monumentous comeback.  The only downside was the fact that he took his shirt off and received a booking as a result.  What an act of stupidity and if he receives a ban later on then that will come back to haunt him.  I see Tilly has said in a post match interview that if he does it again he will be fined 2 weeks wages.

At the final whistle it felt like a win, and the Norwich fans will have felt as though they have been beaten.  The confidence the players can take from that second half performance should lift them ahead of the tough trip the West Brom on Saturday even though there is still plainly work to do.  But it does show that we have the strength of character to live with the standard in this division.

Ratings:

Flahavan – 7 – Beaten three times and was guilty of a poor attempted clearance during the scramble which preceded their second goal.  However, some of his distribution was excellent and he wasn’t afraid to release the ball quickly, which has been a criticism in the past.

Francis – 8 – His best game for me yet even though a rare lapse let Earnshaw in late on for what would have been a winning 4th goal.
Clarke – 6 – Not on song.  Showed definite league 2 class and his distribution was very poor at times.
Barrett – 8 – Coped well with Ehutu and his confidence grows every game.  Is coping better than I thought he would.
Hammell – 8.5 – MOM.  Superb free kick for the second goal, delivery from free kicks and corners posed problems almost every time and his defensive duties were much improved from Saturday.

Gower – 6.5 – Nowhere near as creative tonight although he did improve as the game went on and of course, got the equaliser.  Also got stupidly booked for removing his shirt and whilst I think it’s a stupid rule, he should know better.  After all, it’s not the first time.
Maher – 8 – Superb game from the skipper. Broke up attacks and was always making himself available.
Guttridge – 4 – Oh dear.  Needs a spell on the bench.  Ran the show at Leicester but tonight was a definite liability.  Kept giving the ball away.
Campbell-Ryce – 6 – Again, good work rate but tired early and was far too predictable.

Eastwood – 7 – Great opener, and posed Norwich some problems.  Seemed more willing to do the simple things which I think is important for him at the moment.
Paynter – 6 – Worked hard but not very effective.  Still hasn’t had a shot on goal.

Subs –

Hunt – 8 – Really shored up the midfield and did the simple things very well.  Should be given the chance to start on Saturday alongside Maher.
Hooper – 7 – Showed some good touches and posed Norwich some problems.
Harrold – 7 – Awkward to play against, very quick and I can quite see why Tilly brought him here.  Would like to see him start alongside Eastwood.

The Ref – Mr Ulriah Rennie- 7 – A good performance and he let the game flow very well, which is something I think is crucial and tonight it enabled the game to be played at breakneck pace.

The Crowd – 10.  What fantastic atmosphere and support.  I really believe we created the 3rd goal.

Just a couple of clerical points. Freddy didn't flick it over Shackell's head but cleverly behind him.

Also, should be Etuhu not Ehutu but, as per usual, a very accurate, measured and incisive piece of writing.

Paynter was only centimetres away from scoring his first Southend goal. I heard the ball clip his boot/shin as a cross fizzed past him in front of goal.

Good report FBM however do not agree with your ratings.

Flahavan 5 - Was at fault for first and possibly second goals.

Francis 5 - Distribution was very poor. Only redeamed himself after the triple substitution.

Clarke 5.5 - Agree distribution was poor.

Barratt 7 - A good performance his lack of pace howerer was apparent at times.

Hammel 9 (MOTM) - Best performance to date for blues - free kick / corners were excellent.

JCR 6.5 - Predictable at times would like to have seen him take on more players. However worked hard all match.

Gutts 3 - Possibly worst game for blues - lacking confidence needs a rest.

Maher 8 - Solid display - if he continues to play as well throughout season will surely make ROI squad.

Gower 6.5 - Drifted in and out of match - distribution was however poor, well taken last minute goal.

Eastwood 8.5 - Best performance for Southend this season. Spoke to a friend from Norwich last night their fans thought he was best opposition striker they have seen this season. At fault however for third goal.

Painter 3 - Poor! Not sure what he brings to the side lacks pace, does not battle nor holds ball up well.

Subs

Hunt 8 - Solid display diserves to start against WBA.

Harrold 8.5 - Qualitity! Also deserves to start against WBA

Hooper - 7.5 - Battled well.

Cracking report, as always, fbm.  I still can't quite understand what it was that got us back into the game - although the triple substitution clearly had a big part to play.  But why did Norwich sit back?  When they were spreading it wide, driving forward, we had no answers - and I feared a cricket score.  Instead, they sat back, we roared forward, and the rest was one of the most stirring comebacks I've witnessed in a while at the Hall.  A belter of a game.

Anyhow, here are the MtS ratings.

Flahavan - 6.  Didn't think he was particularly at fault for any of the goals; we conceded largely because he was woefullly exposed by his defence on too many occasions.

Francis - 4.  Oh Simon, Simon.  I bigged you up pre-signature, but you've been letting me down big style.  Far too casual, gave possession away, often caught out of position completely.  Tilly needs to give him a kick up the arse.  When the pressure was on in the second half, he upped his game - but we were 3 down by that time.

Clarke - 5.  I like his energy, his last-ditch tackling, and the way he got forward as a makeshift striker at the end was a siginificant factor in Gower sneaking an equaliser.  His positioning is pretty good too.  But he is error prone - especially with his distribution - and he simply must sharpen that up.  The likes of Earnshaw will gobble up those sorts of chances for breakfast.

Barrett - 6.  I was impressed with Adam last night.  His ability to link attack and defence was magnificent, his aerial ability superb, his tirelessness, his belief.  If and when Efe gets back into the side, I'd have to say that it's Clarke who'd give way on current form.

Hammell - 8. What a joy to have someone who takes deadly free kicks and excellent corners.  Not only that, but he kept his flank pretty quiet, and it was no surprise that most of the Canaries' raiding came via McVeigh on their left.  A superb display.

JCR - 6. Oh, the frustration.  Loads of talent, loads of energy, wonderful skill on the ball and looked a danger going forward.  But where's the end-product, and I'm rapidly falling into the HKB school of thought that wonders whether we're not a more effective team without him.

Guttridge - 2.  Truly, truly woeful.  Possibly his worst display in a Southend shirt.  I struggle to think of one decent telling contribution, other than to gift Earnshaw possession for Norwich's first goal.  Tilson has got a massive problem on his hands now.  Guttridge needs a spell on the sidelines to buck his ideas up; Smith wasn't even on the bench; and that leaves the versatile (but ultimately, non-specialist) abilities of Lewis Hunt.  A loan-signing of a midfielder is beginning to look really vital now.

Maher - 9.  As magnificent as Guttridge was woeful.  Did the job of two men, because he knew he had to.  Always prompting play, ran around tirelessly, put telling challenges and passes in, oozed class.  Where would we be witout Captain Fantastic?  My MotM.

Gower - 8.  Although he drifted out of the game occasionally, he is still our chief attacking fulcrum.  Does not look at all out of place in the side or in the league, and superb for him to get the equaliser.  Magnificent, and vintage Marky G.

Eastwood - 8.  A wonderful opener, trademark Freddy, and a generally effervescent performance.  Ran himself into the ground.  He's back.

Paynter - 4.  Oh dear.  Poor Billy.  Tried to get involved, tried to get stuck in, but just didn't seem at the races.  Behind the pace of the game (admittedly, a full-throttle encounter), gave away possession sloppily too often... it's hard to think of a single telling contribution.

Subs

Harrold - 7.  As effective as Paynter had been ineffective.  Used his height and awkwardness well, held the ball up well, won crucial free kicks.  At the moment, he looks the likelier partner for Freddy to me.

Hooper - 7.  Impressively unfazed by the maelstrom of the match which was unfolding around him.  Distributed well, got into dangerous positions, could have scored but for a last ditch diving block by the Norwich defence.  Is he really only 18?  Could be another gem...

Hunt - 7.  Lots of energy, got stuck in, disrupted Norwich's flow.  If there's anyone who should be fulfilling the Benno role of disrupting the opposition midfield away from home, it's Lewis.  I'd consider him for a starting berth on Saturday, tasked with stopping Gera.

Home fans: 4 and then 10.  Really quiet at times in the first half, and especially when we went down 3-1 after half time.  Raised the roof with the triple sub, and then especially after Hammell's equaliser.  As loud as I've heard the Hall in a while.

Away fans: 8.  I love the "Go ahead City, never mind the danger" chant.  They're a decent bunch, the Canaries, made loads of noise, and filled the away end on a Tuesday.  Top effort.  They saw a cracker, although they'll be gutted, no question - that will feel like a defeat to them.

Ref: 8.  A great performance from Mr. Rennie.  Let the game flow, and didn't get the card out needlessly.  If only we could have him every week.

Matt,

How do you justify the same mark for Adam and JCR based on your comments on their displays last night.

Apart from that spot on I would say. Although you are rather generous with your mark for Luke Guttridge. I'd give him 1 for turning-up.

Because JCR looked pretty sharp for the first twenty minutes, and because I can't give a central defender more than 6 when the opposition have scored three times...

MtS -a few points

Clarke's positioning does win a fair bit of ball but it has also cost us at least a couple of goals already, including Norwich's first as the diagonal ball went over his head. I think Darryl might have distracted him by feinting to go for the cross, but it seems we are vulnerable to it as it was a similar ball to the Sunderland goal.

You shouldn't have cursed Francis by sponsoring him. Sponsoring a bluebelle would always have been the safer move.

Thought Barrett proved his worth last night. I still think it'll be a struggle for him at this level, and full of last ditch tackles rather than snuffing the move out early, but I'm starting to wonder whether his inspirational commitment is worth a place in the team ahead of better defenders. He wanted it more than Norwich last night and I think that lifted everyone. Good ball for Freddy's goal as well - I've been saying that all Freddy needs is some space to work with and first time he get left one-on-one with room to work he produced the goods big time.

Although Gower came up trumps in the end I thought he had a shocker last night for about an hour. It was only when he saw the subs warming up and realised that he might be subbed that he eventually woke up. Up until then I don't think he had done one thing right all game. I'd have been tempted to haul him off after half an hour. Was glad in the end that Tilly kept him on as that was a very cool finish.

I think that it's becoming increasingly evident that Sodje has to play when he's fit, as we are really lacking a dominant presence in the air at the moment. I'd be inclined to play him in the left sided centre back position, as opposing players seem to be targetting Hammell and Gower on that side with high balls, and to shift Barrett to the right alongside the taller Francis. If the likes of Burton and Earnshaw can get a lot of joy from high balls forwards against us then players like Hartson are going to take the **** unless we address the situation.

Noted.  You may have a point - I certainly stand by the assessment that on current form he would give way for Efe, not AB.

Wrong!  The curse was supposed to be attached to the Exiles, not the Zone.  The Exiles' sponsored player - Mark Gower - has been having a stormer this season.  This is because we have established that you were the Exiles' Jonah.

Agreed.  You cannot underestimate the drive and belief AB gives us. His desire was a key factor in us getting a point last night.  I hope he stays with us for the rest of his career and eventually inherits Kev's armband.  A true Southend legend in the making, no question.  I also agree that it was a superb ball forward for Freddy - so good, in fact, that I thought Maher had played it forward!

Spot on about Freddy, too.  Sadly, few defences at this level will give him as much space as he enjoyed last night... but yes, with a bit of space, he was back to his old self - a sparkling display.

Disagree.  Thought Marky G showed plenty in the first half, then went quiet, and then saved his best until shortly before the subs came on, which he maintained for the rest of the game.  No question about it, however - he remains our chief creator.

I thought Gower was very poor first half Matt. Sloppy touches, lack of concentration, no creativity at all.

2nd half he was much better.

(Fair do's - I'm aware that I am occasionally prone to view Mr. Gower through the ole rose-tinteds...)

1st chance to get on here after last night, pretty much agree with fbm with a few minor exceptions. although i was in West Block X 3rd row so the view to the far end is a bit misleading !

Darryl- seemed at fault for the 1st

Maher - absolute quality all game my MOM

Paynter - does not appear to be enjoying his football...... out of sorts.

Harrold...Good 1st touch and intelligant lay offs....another local boy who is up for it

Barrett...written off by too many people too early kept us going when the chips were down

To be creative it would be helpful if people passed the ball his way. That might explain his first half performance.

I've said it enough times before (and been lambasted just about every time for it), it is no good AB being a fantastic last ditch tackler, it takes much more than that at this level. I certainly don't underestimate his passion and commitment but it takes at least one more thing to be a Captain which KM has in abundance. Class. (Oh and funnily enough I've been lambasted for the last three years on this front as well).

To be fair ORM, there were at least 3 occasions in the first half when Gower miscontrolled the ball and allowed it to run out of play.
