I went to Halifax a couple of times in the late 60s and their ground was a complete joke, from memory on one side they had the smallest stand I have ever seen at a League club which surely couldn't have seated 50. On the other side it was covered but only an embankment underneath where at the turnstiles they would hand you a tip up seat to put where you want. The ground was also used as a speedway track and behind the goals it was again just a curved grass embankment. In fairness They did have a good social club with a casino. Roots Hall at the time was only 15 years old and almost "state of the art" in comparison.

Since then of course Southend have progressed to the Championship twice, been to five national finals at Cardiff/Wembley etc. meanwhile Halifax have gone out of the league, gone out of business, reformed and currently struggling to avoid relegation from the Conference.

I'm currently watching Halifax v Altrincham (who have Neil Tolson as manager) on BT sports, and can't believe the ground it has been completely redeveloped. I can really only see three sides but they have a big seated stand opened in 2010, behind both goals are big new stands for standing built in the late 1990s (the speedway track is long gone). No pillars in the way anywhere that i can see. All in all it looks a good, big ground, too big for their needs as one end isn't opened except for big games. In the same time we have sold off the South bank built our small double decker and bolted on seats to existing terraces.

So how can they do it and not us?

Also I watched Freiburg in the German Second Division the other day, they were the first club in Germany to put solar panels on the roofs of three of their stands. What a good idea.

It was Halifax that hosted the Speexway World Championship at short notice back in the early 80's. On the friday they had about 1800 watching the football and the next day 20000 odd for the speedway. I also remember a cup game there with Man City when John Motson was crying about a supposed pitch invasion when in fact the railway sleepers on the terrace collasped due to heavy rain. The Man City fans just slid on to the pitch. Funny as hell to watch.

I watched the match today and I couldn't work out where the massive open terrace that reached halfway to heaven went.

It is the only ground I have been to where I got a nosebleed from being so high.

Over to you Ron?.

How did I miss this .. Halifax v. Altrincham .. Thousands locked out! :winking:

Thank goodness for BBC (I Mean BT) Sport.

Yes, The Shay was by far the worst Football League ground I have been to. However, it was also magnificent in it's charm and bottom of the league culture. Their supporters were proper lower league fans who once put up with anything. Not now!!
Went when we won 5-1 which made the team suit the ground. Marvellous and very memorable.
God Bless The Shay!

What is the saddest part???
Roots Hall is well on the way to being the worst maintained ground in the league. For The Shay 80/81 - see Roots Hall 18/19. : ((

I'm sure I read somewhere that the Shay's redevelopment was paid for by the rugby league side they shared with at the time (may still do, not sure). Pretty sure it was nothing to do with the football club..

Must have been there 4 times, lasr being 76-77???
A big mud slope.one time, behind it was the Bus station??depot??Little kids not watching the game ,only sliding down the hill and people watching the game for nothing, where the bus station was....as you wrote, the social club was ok

So to come back to your original point, what do people think is the current worst ground of the 92?

I think I'd go for Accrington Stanley.

Went there three years ago for a couple of rugby league games. Decent little ground now, with good food and drink facilities, although only two of the four stands were in use. Should we ever find ourselves back there, The Railway is a fine boozer.
