Billericay Town's in form striker Billy Bracknall is subject to a bid from Southend United according to rumours coming from the New Lodge boardroom.

Southend United scouts have been watching Billy since November and Steve Tilson first took note when he fired a hattrick against rivals Canvey Island over the Christmas period and then followed up with a goal at promotion chasing Tooting & Mitcham for a well earned point for his team.

Billy is expected to be worth between £10-20k and is believed to have 2 years left at Billericay.

Tilly and Brush have been sniffing around the Essex nonleague scene for a few months now, Basildon United and Great wakering strikers have caught their eye so it has been mentioned.
The Billericay lad could be a handy peice of kit to have on board as he has abit of flare and pace about him.

Thats him.

IF its true, its nice to see us keep an eye on local non-league talent. Its a system that has served us well in the past with the likes of Freddy Eastwood, Mark Bentley and Mitchel Cole in recent seasons.

Daggers and Peterborough are other sides that regularly dip into the non-league scene for players. There is some diamonds in amongst the rough.

And of course Sir Steve Tilson himself!

Dean Austin aswell, any others?

I think it is always best to have a sniff around the lower regions before plunging in.
:stunned:

It really would be worth looking at the goalscoring charts picking someone out that has banged in for a team in the conference or below but for a naff team and get him in on the cheap. take a gamble. natural goalscoring ability. bear in mind these guys only train part time.

Big step up though isn't it.

Remember Mark Salter who we signed from Frome Town? Had an unbelievable goalscoring at them, and I think he went back to them and is now their all-time leading goalscorer.

He simply didn't cut the mustard, and thats when we was back in League Two. Some players will make the step up, like Eastwood, but others like Salter will fail. Its all about finding more Eastwood's then Salter's.

Massive step up but in our position is the only gamble we can 'sort of' afford that could reap massive reward (transfer fee and goals)

That's kind of the problem if/when Barney goes we really need a proven-ish goalscorer because we already have Spencer who we are taking a gamble on.

I like the sound of this signing purely on the basis that 'Billy Bracknall' is a real old time footballer's type of name.

We should have more of them.

Charlie Austin at Swindon has only recently been snatched from Poole Town...

8 goals in as many games.

"Proven" goalscorers don't guarantee anything. How often have teams signed a "proven" goalscorer who has then failed? Strikers being a success are dependent on them fitting into a team and them getting the supply.

Whoever we sign is going to be a gamble, whether it is someone who has played at this level for a few years (Paynter, Revell), someone on the way down (Freedman, Goater), or someone on the way up from non-league (Eastwood, Hooper, McDonald).

Personally, I'd be sniffing around the local non-league scene for hungry young talent.

Fair point!
