It would seem I might be the only person on the Zone that hasn't turned on Michael Timlin. We even have people living abroad assuming all the negative stuff to be true. Talking to other fans and more importantly the management it appears not all agree with the overwhelming Zone opinion. Now I know we at Southend have to have a couple of players to hate each season ,as it makes a feel much better about ourselves but seeing Timlin arguing with his own fans seems rather sad to me.

If I can put a case forward for the defence.....As I mentioned the first job of a defender is to be able to defend. Timlin has been part of a strong defence and we haven't exactly been leaking goals in the last month. 4 goals conceded in 7 games, 2 of those penalties.

He had more than a good game at MK, fine at Pompey and was excellent (defending) at Walsall. Remember Walsall were one down and never managed a shot until extra time in the second half Yet you read post match reports and people mark Timlin and Demi down because they have already decided that before a ball is kicked.

Yes he has had some shocking passes going forward but they haven't cost us anything. The thing is now people look for false evidence to prove their point. Take Pompey for example. Timlin had a good start a couple of nice strong challenges then they clip a couple of dangerous balls over the top which Timlin had to deal with. To tight to go back to the keeper so as a full back you can put it in row z or better still do what he did, swivel and get a good 50yd clearance down the line. The problem was our 3 man attack were lazy and did nothing to help him out both times. Queue some groans around me and people blaming Timlin for losing the ball.

Again at Yeovil people see their 2 minute highlights and say Timlins fault for the pen 'caught out of position' etc. What you didn't se was there keeper causing us problems with a very flat kick. The bench shouted for our back 4 to attack the ball better as there was a half pace about the game. Timlin attacked and got unlucky with a rebound. If you want to point fingers look at Kightly, or dare I say Lenny's challenge.

There is not one of us who wouldn't have taken 4 goals conceded in 7 games.....Including PB. Despite an unexpected shocking defensive start, due to injuries, including Coker and Hendrie. (queue pointless Brown out posts to spoil Timlin thread) We now look much better especially with Turner coming through 2 games in 4 days. Our problems are in the oppositions half not our own.

I Personally think we all owe Timlin some slack. Time some of you stopped listening to Sky and MOTD punditry about defenders. The stuff about defenders having to be good on the ball, including CB's might apply in the PL. In L1 all you need is people who, dare I say, can keep a clean sheet. Just ask anyone from Wigan or Shrewsbury.

Timlin doesn't deserve some of the flack that comes his way. Although his pass completion rate is poor he always puts in a shift and deserves full credit for that. He is not a left back by trade but is doing his best and even if he is having a bad game he never hides. I would rather eleven Michael Timlin than eleven Nike Rangers in my team.

I think 6 Michael Timlins would beat 15 Nile Rangers

I can assure you that you are not alone in defence of Michael Timlin.

Quite simply he is not a full back, but has been given the job by Phil Brown. As a professional footballer Timlin has accepted that responsibility and as always, is giving it his best shot. His commitment is unquestionable as always.

I don't mind him. He gives his all for the club and team and for that he'll always get my support.

I'm still a Timlin fan.

Scunthorpe should be his 250th appearance for the club:thumbsup:

Usually i think you spout a lot of nonsense Rigsby but i fully agree with your post this time ....

I shall be wearing my SUFC shirt with "Timlin" on the back as usual this Saturday -- i love a player who shows 100% passion and commitment to our fantastic club. He's been a wonderful servant for years and always puts his body on the line for the team ( how many stitches has he had in his head ? ) Any player who says he can try to " run off a broken leg " is alright with me .
Not many people know that Timlin , along with Cox + Ferdinand , travelled up to watch the FA youth cup to cheer the lads on , if they didnt care about the club they wouldnt have bothered.
Personally i feel our midfield has lacked a Timlin this season - he never gives the opposition a moments peace and wins every single 50/50 tackle , the majority of 40/60s and some 30/70s !!!! I would bet good money that he is our quickest player over 5 yards from a standing start. Ok he has a tendancy to give away cheap free kicks on the edge of the area but thats only because he is fully committed to winning the ball and so often the right winger bottles it and dives to win the free kick.
....my match ratings of the last home game ( v Col ewe ):
TIMLIN 8.5 -- Silenced the boo boys. Was superb, always looking positive, so close to scoring goal of the season

It looks like he may not be playing this saturday , i think we will miss his balance , tenacity , organisational qualities and his probing attacking passes .

So at least a few of us appreciate having Timlin in the team !!!!! :Worthy::Worthy::Worthy:

Thanks mate I wouldn't expect anything less from someone who has never liked a single post about anything by anyone else.:winking:

I don't think that many are criticising Timlin, more Brown's insistence on playing him at left back.

By all accounts he has had a couple of decent games away from home, where I was not in attendance, but the games I've seen at home he doesn't play the position well enough. I don't question his heart or commitment, it is his positioning and decision making at left back where he is lacking. He is a decent combative defensive CM, he has been a great servant to the club and should have every fans respect for the way he has put his body on the line. He may not be 1st choice in midfield anymore but that is no reason to shoehorn him into left back, fair enough to cover the odd game but not when we have full backs fit. John White on the bench while Timlin is left back completely baffles me.

John White can cover well, short term, at LB but Timlin is left footed and with Coker out long term and with Hendrie struggling we don't really have a choice.

Again I would argue that just 6 goals conceded at home says our defending at RH is OK.

100% committed. 100% not a left back. 100% can't pass for ****.

Still a useful squad player and doesn't deserve the stick

I agree with the sentiment that we should appreciate the guys commitment but some of the things you have written here make me wonder if you have Timlin confused with somebody else! Winning every 50/50 and most 60/40s? Haven't seen that, not that he is bad just think that is a bit of an exaggeration also if you aren't in the right position you won't have the opportunity to win those tackles. Also I'll take your quickest over 5 yards bet, Harry Kyprianou would beat him.

I think maybe there is a need for a bit more of a sense of balance here. It's true to say that some Zoners have offered less than complimentary views on Michael Timlin, but the majority of the posts that I have seen point out that he is playing in a position that is not his normal one and he is doing a job that the manager has asked him to do. Lets face it, if Ben Coker was fit and available we wouldn't be having this discussion in the first place. What a lot of posters don't understand. me included, is why Hendrie, a specialist left back, is not getting more game time. Those of us that have followed Timlin since he signed from Swindon recognise what a reliable player he has been, and is, when called upon. I actually disagree that everyone has turned on him. A few have an axe to grind, but most on here just want to see the best Southend team possible turning out for us on a Saturday afternoon. If that includes Timlin then great, but I would prefer him in his natural position causing mayhem in the middle of the park.

I'm one of those who like and appreciate what he brings to the side. Personally, I'd play him in midfield as I think we miss him in there and he beings more to that role. If Hendrie is injured/out of favour/ Brown doesn't want to rip up a formula that is working I have no problems with that but I'd rather Timlin played as a defensive midfielder as that is what he is best at.
As well as playing left back he has also played attacking midfield away at Charlton. That is not his strength either, so just let him tackle stuff, that's what he does best.

The crutches may hinder him....

Not sure exactly how much pace Timlin has lost but he was always very quick over the first 5 yards.

I think a lot of his bad passes are as much the fault of the would be recipients. The whole team needs to do better at making themselves available. This hinders a passing game as much as the passing ability of the player on the ball.
