Who do you think will come out on top?

I think the public will tonight see what a lightweight Dave is and the Conservatives will start to slip in the opinion polls.

Lib Dems to come out on top closely followed by Labour.

Agree with that :)

If Gordon Brown manages to impress anyone he would have done exceptionally well. Whenever I've seen him 'debate' he either comes across as extremely smug or childish and more concerned with putting down Cameron then being confident in his own ability (probably rightly so on that front).

Id expect both Labour and Conservative to slide slightly, with Lib Dems taking supporters from each. The Lib Dems should greatly benefit from these debates. They can sit back and allow the other two to sling mud at each other, whilst distances themselves from expenses scandals, this countries troubles etc.

I shall be watching with interest, although I do have the following concerns:

* Will the much-discussed "rules of the debate" stifle any genuine debate, thereby rendering the whole process a bit sterile?

* Will the candidates suffer a severe case of "soundbite-itis", on the basis that the news programmes will be looking for brief clips to show in their bulletins - and those bulletins will be watched far more broadly (and repeated more often - or until next week, at least) than the show itself?

Based on the above factor, in particular, I've a sneaking suspicion that the judgment of the media (which seems to count for far too much, but there you go) could be that Cameron will have done rather well in tonight's debate. We'll see.

Apparently when the first televised debate was held for the US elections in 1960, polls were conducted afterwards with radio and television audiences. The result was as follows: Kennedy topped the polls for the television viewers but Nixon won over the radio audience. I guess that tells you that people actually listened to what Nixon said (not saying what he said was right obviously) while people thought Kennedy must have looked right for the job. So based on that I guess David or Nick will win as Gordon will not get many votes based on his looks!!

That's right, JFK did not have make up for the benefit of the cameras, therefore Nixon followed suit and it was deemed he looked sweaty & shifty. Trick Dicky shifty - never!! :stunned:

Also Kennedy shaved, whilst Nixon didn't, which led to Kennedy using the famous "would you buy a used car off of this man" line. At that moment the election was won.

Got to admit I am a little disappointed that it's only the main 3 political parties who have been invited to debate. I would very much have liked to have heard the views the UKIP, BNP and the Greens.

Do not think we get the full picture or spectrum of opinions when we deliberately leave out other political voices.

Apparently there are concerns that there are only going to be 8 or so questions raised in the 90 minutes tonight so if there were too many other parties none would get the chance to say much.

However an interesting idea, and I would be intrigued to see and hear from these people. Maybe those 3 could have had their own debate, kinda like a Championship debate compared with the Premiership debate. Channel 5 could cover it!

It would get too confusing which is why they only focus on four or five families in Eastenders.

Dave will do the bizzo tonight!

Vote for better brighter Britain VOTE Conservative

Britain is depressing whether Labour or Tories are in charge, but it would be more miserable with Dave the Etonian in charge. We never learn and just seem to go backwards, clinging to old familiarities and preferring to live in a state of self-denial. We suffer from delusions of grandeur yet the grim reality of this uninhabitable and cheerless country means we just become nostalgic and melancholic- neither of which are very healthy dispositions.

I much prefer having the Tories in power we always get great stories about their indiscreet liaisons with ladies of horizontal refreshment. Profumo, Lambton, Archer etc. With Labour in charge all we get is gloom and impending banruptcy.

You forgot Major and Curry. Now that is enough to make you want to vote for anyone but the Torries.

Price changes in the betting for tonight:

Clegg 5/4 from 11/8
Cameron 11/8 from 6/4
Brown 10/3 from 11/4
