Prenton Park is ready for action at 19.45pm Friday 18th. October 2019, it looks like we are going to have a gloomy overcast evening with some light rain showers for the game, with a gentle breeze. (Hope Waddock and the team brighten it up).

Mecky Mellon talks to Tranmere Rovers OS before the game against Southend United

Micky Mellon.jpg Micky Mellon Tranmere Rovers Manager
Tranmere Rovers manager Micky Mellon has challenged his players to “keep on improving” ahead of Friday night’s Sky Bet League One fixture against Southend United at Prenton Park.

Rovers will be aiming for a second win in a row in the third-tier when they host the Shrimpers, kick-off 7:45pm.

And the boss wants his side to keep on getting better as they prepare for Friday night football under the floodlights.

Mellon said: “Everybody is looking for consistency and I think the important thing is to not believe we have got anywhere close to where we want to get to. We want to make sure that everyone, players and staff, understands that we have to keep improving.

“We want to get better all the time. We want to keep getting better and of course we want consistency and good performances from the players as that will give us a good chance of getting results in games.

“We probably have to be a bit careful in saying we are where we want to be yet. We have had a couple of decent results and on the whole there have been some really good performances so we want to keep improving all the time and I want us to keep getting better.

“All games in this level for us are very difficult and we know how hard we have got to work. We’ve watched a lot of Southend and we know that they have some good players and it will be a difficult game so we will have to be at our best in order to try and get a really, really important result under the lights on Friday night.”

Friday night football returns to Prenton Park for the first time this campaign, and Mellon knows that the support that Rovers will receive from the SWA will be important.

He added: “We know what it is going to be like on a Friday night, we know that the atmosphere will be absolutely electric at Prenton Park.

“The crowd are creating a culture here, they are becoming a part of what we do, and they know that they have an important part to play in everything that we do, knowing what their share of the performance is.

“It’s a great relationship at the minute. it is a very together Club and we are enjoying that, we are in a good place as a Football Club, we just have to keep facing forward, keep on improving and always understand what all our parts are in a performance, in moving this fantastic Club forward.”

Gary Waddock talks to the Southend United OS before travelling to Tranmere Rovers

Gary Waddock OS.jpg
Gary Waddock Southend United’s Caretaker Manager

Gary Waddock is looking for a reaction from the players at Tranmere tonight.

Blues were beaten by AFC Wimbledon last weekend 4-1, and Waddock called the current run of form “unacceptable”.

He made it clear that the players must give a much-improved performance under the lights at Prenton Park.

"The players need to react,” said Waddock.

"It’s unacceptable, really, the current situation that we’re in and the players need to respond to that.

"Once they go over that white line all the preparation has been done, and it has been for a period of time now.

"So, the players will have to take responsibility and put in a performance that’s for sure."

Tranmere picked up their third league win of the season against Coventry City last weekend.

Waddock added that Blues will need to be ready to deal with a more hostile reception and a confident Tranmere side.

"I’ve been up there on many occasions and they’re a good crowd.

"I know their manager well, their staff and the crowd are really vocal and get behind their team.

"It’s a great atmosphere and I like going up there, it’s a good club, so we need to react to that, embrace that and put in a performance.

"Last weekend will be a confidence booster for them, getting a really good result on the road.

"We’ll have to make sure we set our stall out early and stay in the game."

Gary Waddock talks to the Chris Phillips at the ECHO before travelling to Tranmere Rovers

Gary Waddock has to delay naming Southend United line-up at Tranmere Rovers

Facing a late fitness test - Southend United striker Stephen Humphrys

Southend United’s caretaker manager Gary Waddock will leave selecting his starting line-up until as late as possible at Tranmere Rovers on Friday.

Blues centre-back Harry Lennon (groin) and striker Stephen Humphrys (thigh) are both facing fitness tests before the clash at Prenton Park.

But Waddock has therefore yet to finalise his side.

“We haven’t named the team yet because there are one or two we have to wait and see if they suffer any kind of reaction to training again,” said Waddock.

“Harry Lennon and Stephen Humphrys have both done some work but Stephen, who trained yesterday, had been out for eight days or so we’re going to have to wait on him.”

Humphrys, who is Blues’ top scorer this term, missed Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to AFC Wimbledon with a thigh problem while Lennon limped off with a groin injury early on.

Luke Hyam (Achilles), Sam Mantom (hamstring), Charlie Kelman (ankle), John White (broken arm) and Layton Ndukwu (hamstring) will all miss tonight’s game along with defender Liam Ridgewell who only returned to training yesterday after recovering from a calf problem.

The Shrimpers - who sit second from bottom in the League One standings - go into the game having suffered four defeats in succession.

And Waddock is eager to see an improved performance from the players.

“The players need to react,” said Waddock.

“The current situation is unacceptable. The players need to respond, take responsibility and put in a performance.”

In contrast, Tranmere have triumphed in their last two games and won away at Coventry City last weekend, meaning they will still be on a high this evening.

“Sunday’s win would have been a real boost for them so they will be going into the game with a lot of confidence,” said Waddock.

“We’ll have to make sure we set our stall out early on and stay in the game.”

Team News

Tranmere Rovers vs Southend United
Gary Waddock provides the latest team news for Friday's trip to Tranmere Rovers.

190803_TPI_Coventry_Southend_048.jpg.gallery.jpg
Mark Milligan

He returned safe and sound and he’ll be available for tomorrow night.

He’s done it a number of times and I spoke to him before he went away with Australia and he said he would be fine. I had a conversation with him when he reported back in this morning and he trained today. He’s fine so will be available.

Harry Lennon

He’s done some work this week.

We’ve not named the team as of yet and there’s one or two we will need to look at before doing so.

We’ll wait until the last minute in terms of team selection.

It was a groin injury [that forced him off against AFC Wimbledon] so we’ll have to wait and see if there’s any reaction at all.

Stephen Humphrys

He trained as well but he’s been out for about eight days so again he’s someone we’ll have to wait and see if there’s a reaction.

Luke Hyam

He won’t be fit or available for tomorrow.

Liam Ridgewell

Ridgey has trained this week with Ben and Steff and trained with the group today. He needs some work to get to the level he needs to be at but the good thing is he’s back out on the grass.

Sam Mantom and Charlie Kelman

Not available.

The Big Preview

Tranmere Rovers vs Southend United

Tranmere Rovers v SUFC Big Preview.jpg
Overview

It is Friday night under the lights for Blues this evening as they travel to Liverpool to take on Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park.

Currently seven points adrift of safety towards the bottom of League One, it is vitally important that Southend start picking up points and quickly, starting this evening against Rovers.

Tonight’s hosts themselves are only one point above the drop-zone at present and have an ever-increasing injury list to contend with, giving Blues hope that they can pick up a positive result.

Form

Southend’s woes have only continued in recent weeks with four defeats in all competitions coming off the back of their opening league win of the season against MK Dons.

Last time out saw Blues lose 4-1 to fellow strugglers AFC Wimbledon at Roots Hall with a hat-trick from Marcus Forss extending Blues’ run without a home win.

Tranmere picked up a smash-and-grab 1-0 win over Coventry last Sunday thanks to a late strike from Corey Blackett-Taylor, their second win in their last six league matches.

Last Meeting

Saturday 11th April 2015

Southend United 1-0 Tranmere Rovers

Corr 38’

Barry Corr’s ninth goal in 11 matches earned Southend a 1-0 win over struggling Tranmere Rovers at Roots Hall as Blues maintained their push for a League Two play-off place.

Corr struck the winner just before the interval, getting on the end of Will Atkinson’s corner and while Tranmere pushed hard for an equaliser the Southend defence remained firm to secure the win.

Blues Team News

Mark Milligan has returned from international duty with Australia and is available again for selection this evening, having missed the defeat to AFC Wimbledon last weekend.

Striker Stephen Humphrys has returned to training also after being out of action for over a week but Gary Waddock is cautious over whether the frontman will feature this evening.

Defender Harry Lennon is touch and go after being forced off last weekend with a groin problem while Sam Mantom, Luke Hyam and Charlie Kelman are all not available.

Tranmere Dangerman

Having impressed against Southend in the past for Shrewsbury and Bristol Rovers, Stefan Payne is likely to be one to look out for this evening for Tranmere.

Payne has been a workhorse for Rovers this term and, despite his main threat being in front of goal, he’s been doing the hard yards defensively as well to help out his team.

Ultimately though, a striker is there to score goals and Payne has four to his name so far this season, including a couple of late, late strikes against Rotherham and Burton Albion.

Ref Watch

David Webb will be our man in the middle this evening, being assisted by Robert Merchant and Mark Jones while Lewis Smith will keep the two managers in check as fourth official.

So far this season, Webb has taken charge of nine matches – seven of which were in the Championship – showing 21 yellow cards and no reds.

And last time Webb took charge of Southend it was a successful night for the travelling Blues as they came away with a 3-0 win on the road at Oldham in April last year.
