Ref Watch .... Tranmere

Mick

The Ref Aficionado.
Man in charge of our vital match on Saturday is Steve Cook from Godalming in Surrey. Although this is his third season, at 24 he remains one of the youngest officials on the list. He has officiated at Roots Hall three times before, most recently the curtain raiser against Huddersfield when he wasn't wonderful but did send off one of theirs. The other two were both two seasons ago; the draw with Cheltenham and the win against Walsall. In these three games he cautioned two home players and seven visiting players in addition to that red card.

He has not refereed us away although he was appointed for the Telford Cup game, but pulled out.

Not an official to have attracted too much criticism prior to this season, but this year his card count has gone through the roof and he does seem to have been on the wrong end of one or two unfortunate situations. His last two games have boasted 9 and 8 yellows respectively - contributing to a massive 97 yellows and 7 reds in just 21 games. I fancy him to reach his century on Saturday.

He will be assisted by Gavin Muge and Gary Young both from Bedford, with Carl Berry from Cheam on 4th official duty.

Sounds like another ref who has had his backside kicked for not issuing enough cards, we need refs who will allow the game to flow, not someone who is going to stop play every few minutes to issue cards, no wonder supporters are turning their backs on football. Ah well, a 3-1 win for us and half a dozen yellow cards. Macca is due a red, hope he keeps his head. UTB

They don't stop play just to issue cards do they? Play seems to stop anyway when there's a foul. Football has no flow to it because of that anyway - players seem to be actively not interested in getting on with a quick free kick.

I'd rather see refs actually apply some discipline for a change, not ease off even more. Any deliberate foul should be a card, yet a very small percentage actually receive one. That's what drove me away from playing football.

With blatently deliberate fouls i agree with you, the problem seems to be that too many refs are stopping games for the slightest touch, they are also encouraged to issue too many cards. Football should be a flowing game, it always was a contact sport, sadly i am afraid that some games become quite tedious because of the needless stoppages. As for blatent and obvious deliberate dangerous play then yes, the game should be stopped and the guilty player punished.

That's not what the Laws of the Game say. In any case it is often difficult for a referee to accurately judge intent.

Those offences which justify a caution are clearly prescribed within the Laws.

I personally think there are far too many cards shown for fouls, often slightly mistimed tackles, but far too few for dissent and cheating.

I get annoyed with refs who shy away from giving cards for 'professional' shirt pulls / trips to stop counter attacks. This type of foul spoils the game - especially with our set piece delivery.

Agreed, I'd like to see both cheating & dissent treated far more severely.

In the paper this morning there was a piece about Gus Poyet getting into trouble with Mr Cook and being reported to the FA.
