We’ve won more than we’ve lost against Dagenham and Redbridge both in League matches and various cup/trophy games.

On to the officials, Saturday’s referee has multiple and diverse sporting interests and, fittingly, comes from Rugby. He is Jacob Miles and should not be found wanting for fitness – he is a marathon runner and triathlete. Three years ago he was from the Brighton area and working as a Referee Administrator for Sussex FA, amongst other things. More recently he was in the running for the Milton Keynes referee of the year award (and may have won it for all I know). He also umpires tennis at a high standard, having worked at 18 Grand Slams world-wide and this year at Wimbledon he was a Chair Umpire (equivalent to a middle in football).

This is his second season as a National League Referee and in that time he has done 24 matches producing a low-ish 59 yellow cards and high-ish 5 reds. This season’s 11 matches have seen just 25 yellows and 2 reds and include the earlier 7-4 Cup win for Halifax and Dagenham’s defeat at Woking. Also, more recently, he took charge of our Friday night match at Grimsby when a very early goal condemned us to a 1-0 defeat - yellows for Egbri and Ferguson and one of theirs. I thought he did okay.

He was also an Assistant for our 2-0 defeat at Portsmouth back in 2018/19.

Assisting will be Grzegorz Kornasiewicz from Witney and James Hurst from London. The latter was also assisting at the only other Trophy match in our club’s history and the former at our match at Wealdstone. Standing by as Fourth Official will be Hugh Gilroy from Chiswick who was Kornasiewicz’s fellow Assistant at Wealdstone.

What’s a middle in football?

Jacob Miles has been replaced as referee of this match by Football League referee, Sam Purkiss from Highbury.

This will be his third Southend match.

A little over 30 years of age, he was promoted to the Football League referees list two seasons ago after a couple of seasons on the National League. Originally from Gainsborough, he is a graduate of Cambridge University and has qualified as a solicitor who advises on commercial and regulatory matters relating to sport, sponsorship, the exploitation of intellectual property and publishing. So he's not in refereeing for the money.

He first came to prominence when he sent off 5 home Wingate and Finchley players in an Isthmian League match six years ago. This, of course, caused the match to be abandoned with Thurrock leading 1-0 and Stuart Thurgood scoring the only goal. Little, if any, blame for this was attached to the referee in this most unusual occurrence.

Co-incidentally his first Southend match, at Roots Hall, was as a late replacement for Trevor Kettle in the Leasing.com Trophy match against Brighton’s Under 21s in front of 641 spectators. I thought he had a steady match, we lost 0-2 to their kids with yellows for Demetriou and Hyam and one of theirs.

His second was not his best. Coventry at home in 2019/20. a 2-0 defeat with just one yellow to them.

A common refereeing term.If you're appointed to referee a match, that's a "middle" as opposed to being an Assistant or Fourth Official.
I thought this middle was quite good and that’s something I very rarely say about British referees at any level.
