I've never been asked to show my match ticket on the door of the Spread. Mind you I don't go in there any more after the way they handled that Cambridge game. Rather give my custom to the Railway.

Yeah, they know how to deal with Cambridge fans.

I'm guessing that was a reference to the unfortunate incident that happened outside the pub later that night. I doubt that would have happened if the Spread had dealt with the earlier issue correctly. All speculation of course though. All I know is the landlord did not let any of the Cambridge mob in that day despite pretty determined attempts before the game and during the second half and fair play for him for that.

I don't know the Blue Boar, is there no outside drinking space other than out the front? If the licensing boards are coming down hard on the Roots Hall bars at present and being quite strict on numbers permitted, then surely this ought to be continuing in the pubs and bars outside the ground? It can be quite intimidating walking past the Boar, even on the other side of West Road at times.

I may be wrong, but I think, since the Cambridge game, the guys on the door at the Spread have been "upgraded" (if you understand what I mean). They have more "presence" and I would suggest, give off more of an aura of being less likely to accept any BS from opposing fans.

That's unfair on the two lads who were on the door v Cambridge. They done a good job and took a huge risk jumping in front of 30+ bullies. By all accounts they had not been told to stop away fans coming in the pub

The Spread is a joke after his Simon Dobbin incident and it didn't even happen outside that pub. Plastic glasses, no darts or pool from 1pm - 7pm!!!

I'm not criticising them, just commenting that the ones now seem "bigger".

Same in the bars in the ground.

Actually the guys on the door of the Spread now are the ones who were there before the refurb, when the refurb was done they weren't kept on and the gig went to another company, cheaper probably, although I don't know.
At the start of this season we were back to the previous guys who are pretty good at sniffing out any travelling fans and anyone likely to cause grief. Must admit I don't get asked for a ticket or any ID neither do my sons but then we've been going in there for years so we're obviously recognised.

That's true and they deserve a lot of credit for putting themselves in the way to try and stop it, or at least even it up a bit. Must admit I don't think I've ever been happier to see the Old Bill.....

That's the whole point of my post. After not getting in the first pub as a mob they slipped in small groups. If the landlords, police, club, stewards, fans don't report things to each other all you do is dump the problem in someone else's lap.

As Cockle43 says we were very lucky in the Spread. It was a very tense stand-off and even some gasses flying around , I ended up soaked in beer but glad I wasn't on my way too Moorfields Eye hospital. The next person my not be so lucky.

Think the new attitude of letting the away fans out if there's trouble in the air is asking for problems. The policing today seems very naive compared to the old days
A bar for the away fans would be O.K., but it will never stop trouble. The Golden Lion was the away fans pub, and it worked well with hardly any trouble with Southend fans a few yards away in The Spread Eagle. The trouble was always from away fans that had come for a punch up and went looking for Southend fans in and around The Spread. That's when it kicked off. The Blue Boar is now the away pub. The Luton fans outside The Blue Boar were very mouthy to passing Southend fans, but didn't attack them, thanks to a police presence. The separate Luton mob that came up Shakespeare Drive did all the damage, with no police escort, and were given a free reign to assault anyone they wanted. So in my view, better policing is the answer. No away fans should be allowed to come out of The North Bank and go up Shakespeare Drive. No large mob of obviously away fans, should be allowed to enter The Spread Eagle, and should be shepherded up to The Blue Boar, or down to The North Bank.

Trouble at t'Hall !
What kind of trouble?
I don't know...Mr Wentworth just told me to come and say there was trouble at the Hall....I didn't expect a Spanish inquisition!!

Yep, it's gone full circle. In the Seventies they were pretty clueless. Then they got clued up and well organized, especially in the Nineties. And now they are absolutely clueless again.

In the nineties everyone was on acid and luvin each other/sharing fanzines and flowers etc......

The trouble has been very infrequent and is usually only a small group of fans. Obviously this is no consolation to Simon Dobbin and his family but I don't think there's a big problem at all to be honest.

Yeah that is true, just seems to have been quite a bit of trouble in this calendar year that has been well documented on here. Hopefully 2016 brings peace around the Hall 100% of the time!
