Shrimpers Trust News Trust Q&A meeting with Chris Powell Monday 24th September 2018

It was a really good evening with CP and I was impressed by his straightforward honesty and of course his humour. He was asked why he chose Oxley as captain and someone said that presumably Oxley would resume the captaincy at Wycombe to which he replied Not necessarily. And so it proved.

He would have liked to have made more changes close season to lower the average age of the squad but financial constraints and existing contracts stopped that.

Someone asked where did we practice corners and free kicks ... at Roots Hall or B&L, because they’re crap. He said they practice at both. He would like to do more on the RH pitch but even though it’s in good nick this season that wouldn’t do it much good. The dimensions of the B&L pitch are exactly the same as RH, but you don’t have that awful step up to take corners at B&L. If he knew why they were poor this season whereas they were good at the end of last he’d know what to do about it!

He was asked about the naff standard of refereeing in the lower divisions and he said it was a problem, but not just for the lower divisions. He thought the fourth official role could be better, not just to organise substitutions and keep him in his area, not that they do! He said if they were able to assist the referee in decision making that would be something. All they can say is “Yes, you should have had a free kick/penalty there.” Apparently there is still a referee’s assessor in the stands. The managers meet him about 20 minutes before kick off but they are not allowed to speak to them after the game to make any points. The referee for that afternoon’s closed doors game was excellent – an ex-player with an excellent level of fitness and understanding of the game. He hopes he will progress to ref league games as that’s what we need.

Many thanks to all at the Shrimpers Trust for organising an enjoyable event.

Can't think of too many ex-players refereeing locally. Steve Parmenter is the only one who comes to mind and he's not going to make it at the age of 41 and several levels to go.
