So, I'm taking the plunge and buying a spanking new TV. I'm going with Sony, purely for brand reliability and I'll get an extended warantee.

What I want to know is, is there any real benefit of going for a 200hz Full HD TV over a 100hz? Both being LCD Screens, I have to decide whether to go with 40inch 200hz (Motionflow, they call it) or a 46inch 100hz.

I'm not too bothered about the extra size of the screen, 46inch is probably the biggest TV I could get for the size of my lounge anyway, but is the 200hz engine going to significantly improve the picture quality?

That's the exact model I'm looking to buy, only the 46" model has a 100hz engine.

I'd throw Panasonic into the mix too. Any reason why you're going for LCD over Plasma? Size isn't everything

My old man had a Plasma and had nothing but problems with it, I also know that Plasma's have a few problems with images being burned onto the screen if left the same, and I'll also be using the TV for a fair bit of gaming.

I think image burn is a thing of the past really, and isn't an issue with newer models. Don't rule them out, because the image quality if definitely better on larger screens.

Says on the Sony website is has the 200hz engine too?

Looking on Avforums a while back, they weren't sure about the amount of lag the TV may have whilst gaming. Tests showed some lag, but people who owned it said they couldn't feel any.

Hmm, Possibly the 46" model is slightly different, maybe not with the Bravia 3 engine, as it was almost identical in price to that model you've posted. I'll probably go with the 40" mode for the Bravia 3 Engine.

Panasonic do make teh best Plasma's and they do have a very slight edge in picture quality . "00Hz screens "re draw" faster for a better picture .

Take that back turns out LED's use more power then LCD's

The new Samsung LED?

Saw one in a shop and the picture was outstanding. No idea how much it costs tho.

I've had a 40" plasma for about 5 years with no problems. Also bought a 50" samsung Plasma from tesco which is great. No idea about MHz but getting sky HD made amassive picture improvement. Are you putting an HD feed into it?

Yep... Now that Sky are giving the boxes away for free I'm taking them up on the offer.

I was sceptical at first but after getting it it's well worth it. The other thing you could consider, although picture won't be as good is a projector and a massive screen.

Had my 40" Samsung LCD for two and a half years now. Have had no complaints with it at all. Perfect picture when fed with a HD source.

The new LED Samsungs are very nice tellys. Sonys are ok, tho over priced for the technology and suffer from clouding.

Just always get the biggest one you can fit into the room.

Cheers for the help guys, I had a look around at specific websites and saw that the KDL40Z4500 achieved a "Highly Recommended" rating from the HDTV Test website... I'll be making my purchase this week and it'll be here just in time for Christmas.

what ever you get , get the bigger size

after you have had it for a while it will no longer seem big.

As has been mentioned before the best website out there is AVForums .

Its also well worth remembering that a lot of the tests in magazines are eiterh after they ahve palyed with the settings , or even after they have calibrated the set for that room (needs specialist will cost £200+). A lot of people don't touch the settings and therefore potentially don't see the TV at its best
