Tonight's referee is Neil Swarbrick from Preston. A very experienced official who, at the start of this season, joined the Select Group of Premiership referees. He is being eased in gently with just 8 Premiership games so far, virtually all of them fairly low key. He is making his Roots Hall debut.

He has invariably done a good job when I've seen him.

He has officiated four previous Southend away games; most recently the 3-1 end of season defeat at Wycombe last year with Prosser picking up the game's only card. Prior to that it was the League Cup defeat at Hull and before that a 4-1 defeat at Leeds and lastly a 4-0 defeat at Sunderland.

So our record with him is played four, lost four; taking a more positive view, you could also say all the games have been home wins.

The move to the SG has seen his card count rise from below average to significantly above. He has shown 81 yellows and 4 reds from 23 games.

Former Trowbridge Town player, Adam Nunn is again one of the Assistants, as he was at Wycombe. The other one has a somewhat shorter journey, Darren Blunden from Dartford and the 4th Official has an even shorter journey, being ex-Premiership referee Andy D'Urso from Billericay.

Hopefully he'll do as good a job as Mick Russell did the other day.

It's so nice to see a ref actually let the game flow. Their winger did two outrageous dives in the first five minutes, but after the ref ignored the second one he soon cut it out. Even Anthony Grant spent more time on his feet than on the deck and I soon forgot that there was a ref there. Any more performances like that and he'll be chucked off the list.

A referee who usually officiates with a smile on his face, he looks to allow play to continue where possible and has a well below average card count.

Nice to be proved right every now and again !
