Youth Team
Last nights bench contained 5 midfield players, a goalkeeper and a striker. I fear for our promotion chances unless we sign extra players when the loan window opens,

Def need cover in central defence area. Phillips not playing well at the moment, and could be out injured at anytime. Prosser out Friday evening, maybe back sooner rather than later, fingers x, Bennett, is that his name, out long term, Thompson, well ok, but the jury out on him at the moment. Is there anybody else, get some cover in PB.

Apparently PB tried to re sign Keirnan but Wigan said no. Expect another CB to come in over the next week or so and would also like another forward or a left sided attacking player.

Our problem IMO is the strikers Phil has do not score many! Many on here love to live in the past and quote when the 3 main men were a lot younger and finding the net with relative ease,However the simple facts are Fred,Barry and Lee have only mustered 28 in the league combined in nearly 3 years!,On average they hit 3 league goals each per season based over the last 3 seasons including this season.

Waits for the historians to throw their stats from yesteryear.

Need 3 players I think. Centre back, decent winger to cover Hurst and Straker and a striker with some pace who knows where the net is. Can't see us getting 3 good loans in though, think we'll get a centre back and maybe another young unproven striker.

Think we need a centre back urgently. Phillips looks more and more like cover at best, Prosser is adequate and Thompson has grown on me but I am not sure he is really ready for week in week out football yet.

We're well stocked in midfield which isn't necessarily a bad thing at this level - like the England team, when we play 2 in the middle we're likely to get over-run so having a third doesn't do any harm. Equally our strikers don't score because of the way the team is set up - not a criticism, but a statement of fact! It's very much solidity first with Brown, and as we're high in the league I'm not saying he's wrong. However if we played with 2 wide men, and players like Corr were heading towards goal rather than playing with their back to it, his name would appear on the score sheet much more often like it did in the first season under Sturrock when he was playing in a much more average side.

we're over-reliant on Kevan Hurst, which means when he has 3 quiet games in a row (yes i know he scored on Tuesday but otherwise was quiet) we look a lot less threatening.
given we now have a week off, i expect a return to the usual 4-5-1 formation against Mansfield (which works well away from home), but I agree we need a pacy striker to give us something different, OR to utilise Straker or Leonard (our quickest players) as a number 10 off Corr.Would also like to see Laird and Gomis given some game time.

I wonder if we can entice Britt Asombolonga back? He's only scored 15 goals in 26 appearances for the Posh, so should be feeling goal starved.......

I wish!

:stunned: Dave, come on! He's been one of our best and most consistent players this season! His is the first name on the team sheet for me of our outfield players!

Can't agree, for most of this season we have played 1 up top with Hurst and Straker supporting. It's not easy to score as a lone striker. However in this system, because of the system Hurst and Straker have had their fair share of the goals. Also when we played 2 up top at the start of the season and before his injury Freddy was scoring for fun.

You say over the past 3 seasons they had scored 28 goals between them, yet Corr missed well over a season out injured, Barnard hasn't played this season and was in and out of loans, before his loans he was scoring at Southampton and Freddy as had injury's.

Everyone is right we do not score enough goals however we don't concede many either. Football isn't always about attack attack attack, its about defending your own goal as well, and if the team went all out to score more goals we could become more vulnerable at the back.

Barnard can't last 90 mins at the moment, Freddy can't last 90 mins and isn't match fit and BBBC struggles with playing every game.

Not a good recipe for regular goal scoring.

The squad is in pretty good shape in my opinion. Yes another CB would strengthen the area that probably needs it most but got to be better than what we already have - which is why PB tried to get RK back from Wigan. Prosser is now one of the first on my team sheet when fit and frankly rate Thompson higher than Phillips who has been looking increasingly exposed (save for the odd super game) for the last 18 months.

I'd just like to see Hurst switched to the left flank cutting in on his right and allowing Coker to overlap on the outside - with Atkinson playing wide right of a midfield 5 and perm/rotate any two from the 5 or 6 options he has in midfield engine room along of course with Leonard who plays every game.

You now have Barnard when properly fit competing with Barry for the orthodox No 9 shirt and Eastwood used as much as his body allows coming on from bench as impact substitute either playing alongside one of those guys if we need to revert to 4-4-2 or, I personally think, as a 'replacement' to Hurst in the position I detailed above - but his main orders being to simply cut in from the left hand side and shoot on sight.

Three games in a week on heavy ground with some players feeling their way back to fitness not ideal -but that won't happen again weather permitting this season - and with a week until Mansfield plus a relatively kind February on paper in terms of opposition - more reasons to be very cheerful this morning than not.

Still 5 games to play this month though so the weather needs to start becoming a little less wet to allow the pitches to firm up a bit.

You posting this in every thread ?

How about we sign a young striker from a premier league team then if you arent happy with our front line?

Oh you wasnt happy then either....

What you are completely missing is the fact with one striker you arent going to have strikers scoring lots of goals, Corr has to play with his back to goal most of the time.

Would be great to get a prolific striker but they dont exactly grow on trees, you have to take a chance on the likes of Woodrow/Assombalonga etc and you never know which you are going to get.

I do think its unfair to write off the likes of Barnard when he has only just arrived, give him a chance to get match fit first.

I think the squad is decent, hence the league position.Another wide option would with pace would be good.Brown has a lot of contacts in the football world and i am sure we will add one or two players when the loan market opens up again.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but Phil Brown said he was trying to get Rob Kiernan back on loan.

Disagree, Leonard, Hurst, Corr, Coker and Atkinson more essential, probably White too.

Prosser is ok. He does a job but I still don't think he is much of a footballer. He has improved a lot but I don't really believe anyone can look at him and think he is anything better thank adequate. Cant fault his commitment but that will only get you so far.

If we had a couple of decent defenders I don't think Prosser would get a look in.

Agreed, Prosser has really improved and Id want him in the team every game, but losing Hurst would be a far bigger problem.

I think Prosser is however better than adequate...

I think we have an excellent squad at this level.
With regards to strikers. Surely Barnard was brougt in to boost this area. He is a good player when match fit.
I do think we rely on BBBC way too much. He tries hard but for me is not nearly good enough when you take his power and size into consideration. He lacks technique in front of goal - which is what it is all about.
Not knocking Barry, just saying it as the stats prove : (
