Ref Watch v Orient on Friday .....

This is the "official" one. Beware pale imitations, especially when they come from bitter eastenders and contain large doses of sour grapes.

Friday’s match against Orient will be refereed by Grant Hegley. An experienced official, this will be his 11th competitive match at Roots Hall (won 7, drawn 1, lost 2 (the ones we lost were to York and Boston and look what happened to them; so win here at your peril Orient!)). He has still not yet refereed a Southend away League game although he officiated in the 2-0 LDV win at Northampton. His most recent League appearance was last season against Brighton, which went okay.

He is a regular official for home friendlies, the most recent of which was his handling of the Fulham game this season.

He has a somewhat laissez faire style to his refereeing, resulting in far less than average cards. He has only sent off one player in 33 months. A third of his last 30 matches have been cardless and this season his 5 matches have produced 6 yellows ... oh, and no away wins.

He hit the headlines two seasons ago when he was suspended for too lenient refereeing. Shortly after that he showed ten yellow cards in a game twice. I’m sure the assessors must have been much happier with that. Has long since reverted back to his original style.

Despite this approach he seems to be back in favour with those in power as half his appointments this season have been Championship level.

He is a far better official than Mr Stokes would have you believe.

Assisted by Richard Beevor and Mike Blackledge with Eamonn Smith on the numbers board.

Oi, oi, oi, sunshine! Do believe it's mine being linked to from the fromt page. You've been usurped by the illegitimate son of an illegal immigrant and a chim-in-iy sweep. Luvaduck!

Slight change to the original appointments in that Dave Margetts (fresh from refereeing Billericay's mid-week match not especially well) replaces Mike Blackledge as 1st Assistant.

The referee tonight ....

thought he was quite good, after the debarcle of the Brighton game referee and the one we had last Saturday up at Crewe! Who was it out of interest? didn't get a programme! but nice to know their are some decent ref's around this level!

I think you'll find I gave the fuller answer :p This is not a Proctor and Gamble situation!

my answer was right and was quickest though wasn't it?!

he was also suspended for 14 days in 2005 for (in FA Terms) - "less than proficiently applying the Laws of the Game after failing to send off Sheffield United's Keith Gillespie after the final whistle of the match against Reading on 1 October".

Exactly as promised. A very decent performance, keeping the lid on a competitive match without resorting to too many cards. Those 3 he did show represent his highest card count of the season.

A charge which could reasonably be levelled at Attwell .... but won't be as he's the current "wunderkind" in refereeing circles.

the refereeing profession must be struggling if Atwell is their big positive for the future!

With certain other refs we've had this season there could well have been a blizzard of cards handed out. Fair play to Mr Hegley he tried to keep the game flowing.

"No cards" Hegley. Good decisions but didn't produce a card when needed.

I don't think either the game or our disciplinary record suffered from his approach; it makes a welcome change.
