Vice Captain

Ayrshire Blue

The Custard Splat
Who'd you think will be our vice captain next season ?
I think it was Clarke but he now looks set to depart.

I'd go for someone like Macca although he gets booked to much so did Maher though.

Thoughts ???

In my opinion it should be someone that has been at the club for a season or two. Someone that is respected by the players and then to a lesser extent the fans although don't we love everyone? It should be someone who leads an example on and off the pitch.

Now i do not know too much about behaviour off the pitch but lets take a look at the candidates (first team players in my opinion) from our small squad.

Mildenhall - Only just joined the club - NO
Francis - was originally a contract rebel but fits categories - MAYBE
Barrett - Captain
Sankofa - New signing - NO
Scannell - Didnt play hardly at all last season so new + young - NO
McCormack - Wears heart on sleeve - centre of pitch - YES
Moussa - young, inexperienced - NO
Bailey - No guarantees of being at club - contract rebel - NO
Walker - young - just one season - not mature enough - NO
Barnard - young and new to club - NO
Revell - new to club - might not play - NO
Furlong - New but lots of career experience - MAYBE

I would go for McCormack!!

I think calling Francis a contract rebel is a bit harsh, he rejected one contract, which I am sure a large majority of people do, he never expressed a wish to leave the club, I think it was just an odd decision to transfer list him which I am not sure he wanted to happen either. Possible future C/VC if he stays around however I feel it has to be Macca as I am not sure that Furlong will play every game.

Although if we did sign a new commanding centre back with experience he cold be it. I don't think that a player HAS to have played for the club for a few years, although it would be ideal.

Yes I agree - Was just making the point that it might dwindle on other players minds and stuff but I suppose it is part and parcel of the footballing world focusing on money! I agree with you. I shall leave that there for now though. I knew what I meant. Good point though mate. Cheers

Would have gone with Clarkey before all the shenanigans, but definitely Macca now. Especially since he looks to have taken on the no. 8 shirt worn by our previous captain.

I do kind of agree with you, if you had to make a list of pros and cons then i guess it would go on that list, however I don't think it will really make a difference as Macca will be VC either way I would imagine.

Lets see who is given the armband when Barrett is substituted in one of his 45 minute games or perhaps doesn't start a game pre-season. Ofcourse the vice-captain may also not be on the pitch at the same time but perhaps it will give us an insight.

May I ask though - what role does a vice captain play in your opinion?

Is the answer - the same as the captain when the captain is absent.

or - does the vice captain have their very own role in their own right - if so how important is it to the team?

Just putting the question out there...

If Clarky is playing for us next season (and I really hope he does) then he would be my choice however, if he is not then I have to go with the same as the other replies and go for Macca.
I know his discipline record is not that good but, if given VC it may settle him down a little

Another point on the Macca thing is that his FB status is now "no longer single" so that may also have a settling down effect and he turns in to a great big softy!

Definately Macca for Vice Captain. Plays with his heart, might help him keep it reined in and rewards him for loyalty.

Furlong will be a great influence & example to all the players and doesn't need an official title to do so.

If Clarkey stays, then i would have him as vice as i think centre-halfs tend to make the best captains. If not, then i suppose it is out of Furlong and Macca
