Man in charge at Walsall will be primary school headteacher from Horsforth near Leeds, Jon Moss. In his 5th season as a League referee, he has only refereed Southend once before - last season's 3-0 defeat at Hartlepool when Adam Barratt was sent off.

A reasonably highly rated official who gets plenty of Championship matches, he will let the game flow if possible. He has refereed a Conference play-off final.

Average to below-average card count.

Assisting will be Simon Barrow of Staffordshire and Nigel Smith from Derby. Dan Meeson, also from Staffs will be doing 4th official duties.
