In last Sunday's Non League Paper, the lead story was titled as above. The story went on to say that
Clubs on either side of the fence have joined the clamour to see three Conference sides promoted into the Football League.
Conference chief executive John Moules insists there is a case for introducing three, up, three down in the near future backed by the success of Yeovil and Doncaster in Division Three this season.
Southend may have been at the wrong end of Division Three for much of the season but their manager Steve Tilson - a former Non-League star with Canvey Island - said he would welcome the move. He said "it would give the Third Division more spice. Carlisle and York have been struggling for a while, but if you suddenly chuck a third in, six or seven other clubs could have been dragged into it. It's all about money and if there's money in the Conference I can't see any reason why there shouldn't be three up."
Southend chairman Ron Martin, the Third Division's representative on the Football League Board of Directors, said; "I like things as they are. We have continuity and stability at the moment and i wiould be unwilling to jeopardise that."
I've had enough spice for a couple of seasons, thank you very much!
