Kevin Maher speaks to Southend United OS looking ahead of this afternoon’s game against Wealdstone

Southend United’s head coach Kevin Maher

Kevin Maher knows Wealdstone will be a difficult opponent as Blues look to back up their point against second-placed Wrexham last weekend.

His side travel across London to face the Stones, who started with four wins from their last five, and although they’ve drawn their last four, Stuart Maynard’s men currently sit sixth.

On the challenge that they’ll face, Maher said: “Wealdstone have started ever so well. They’ve got themselves up there early in the season and it’s a tough game that we have to take all the good stuff we’ve done into.

“We played them at the back end of last season and ended up losing a game we felt we should have taken something from.

“They will try and play an open and expansive game. It’s good football and they’ve got some good results. They have some dangerous players we need to be wary of."

A very good performance against Wrexham was somewhat overshadowed by Jake Hyde’s disallowed goal, which was ruled out after some deliberation between the referee and the linesman.

During the week, Maher sought clarification on the decision, explaining: “I spoke to Mike Jones [EFL Head of Refereeing] and he admitted it was wrong. It couldn’t have been handball but that’s that and we move on now.”

“It was the wrong decision and however you came to that outcome it was wrong. That’s disappointing because it cost us a couple of points and a win would’ve been a big statement but we move on.”

He was still pleased with the team’s overall display against the Dragons and knows that Blues are capable of climbing the table rapidly if they can start converting performances into points.

He added: “We got a response on Saturday against a team who will be at the top end of the table. Anyone who finishes above Wrexham will probably be promoted but we went toe-to-toe with them.

“If anything, they were the ones hanging on at the end. It shows what we can do and there have been a lot of games this season that have been similar to that.

“We’ve wanted a few more points and we should’ve had a few more. Something has got to turn for us – one or two decisions going our way or a bit of luck.

“We’ve had a couple of halves where we haven’t hit the heights but we’ve spoken to the players about being us, what we’re all about and getting back to that.”

Southend United boss Kevin Maher feels things will soon start to turn for the Shrimpers.

Maher takes his Blues side to Wealdstone this weekend.

And he heads into the game boosted by the performance in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Wrexham.

“We got a response on Saturday against a team who will be at the top end of the table,” said Maher.

“Anyone who finishes above Wrexham will probably be promoted but we went toe to toe with them.

“If anything they were the ones hanging on at the end.

“It shows what we can do and there have been a lot of games this season that have been similar to that.

“We’ve wanted a few more points and we should’ve had a few.

“But I know we’ve got a good group there and we look to build again.

“Something has got to turn for us – one or two decisions going our way or a bit of luck.

“The harder we work hopefully the luckier we get and that’s the way we keep on working.”

Blues head into Saturday’s match sitting 17th in the National League standings.

But Maher feels the Shrimpers have shown what they can do.

“There hasn’t been a game this season where we haven’t performed at some stage of it,” said Maher.

“We’ve had a couple of halves we haven’t hit the heights but we’ve spoken to the players about being us, what we’re all about and getting back to that.

“I think we did that on Saturday and the disappointing thing was it wasn’t backed up by three points.”

Blues are now turning their attentions to this weekend’s match with Wealdstone who currently sit sixth in the standings.

And Maher has been impressed by their opening few fixtures.

“Wealdstone have started ever so well,” said Maher.

“They’ve got themselves up there early in the season and it’s a tough game that we have to take all the good stuff we’ve done into.

“We played them at the back end of last season and ended up losing a game we felt we should have taken something from.

“They will try and play an open and expansive game.

“It’s good football and they’ve got some good results.

“They have some dangerous players we need to be wary of but I’m sure they will be wary of us too and it makes for a good match.

“It’s one we will go into with good confidence too.”

Update – Blues boss Kevin Maher is still without some key players

Southend United midfielder Harry Taylor is back running as he steps up his return from a knee injury.

The summer signing has not featured since the opening day of the season.

But Blues boss Kevin Maher has now confirmed Taylor is making good progress along with striker Harry Cardwell who has yet to feature this term due to an ankle issue.

“Harry (Taylor) is out running with the physio and he will be with Stef (Russo),” said Maher.

“It’s the same with Cardwell as well and they’re probably a couple of weeks away from joining in training.”

However, striker Rhys Murphy – who has not featured since January due to a knee problem – has started to join in with training.

“Murph has been joining in and we’re looking to build him up because he’s been out for such a long period of time,” said Maher.

“He has a training programme we’re adhering to on a weekly basis.

“He joins in some sessions but doesn’t do them all and we’re trying to build him up that way. “

Goalkeeper Steve Arnold remains sidelined with a back problem.

Big Preview

Wealdstone v Southend United

Big Preview.jpg
Overview
Blues make the journey around the M25 on Saturday to face Wealdstone in their second ever trip to Grosvenor Vale.

Kevin Maher’s men are still looking for their first away win of the season, but they’ve had to face three of last season’s top seven.

They avoided a third consecutive defeat against Wrexham last weekend and were unlucky not to win it by all accounts, dominating the Dragons particularly in the second half.

The games don’t get too much easier, as the Stones have only lost once this campaign so far and will provide a stern test.

The opposition

Wealdstone are perhaps best known for becoming the first club to win the non-league double, the Conference and the FA Trophy, which they did back in 1984/85 under Brian Hall.

That was only a couple of years before automatic promotion to the Football League was introduced, and as a result, the Stones have never played above the fifth tier.

After dropping as low as Division Three of the Isthmian League in 1995, Wealdstone gradually worked their way back up. They were promoted into the Conference South in 2013/14 and then to the National League in 2019/20 on points-per-game.

This their third season in the National League, Stuart Maynard’s men have finished 19th and 16th in the previous two and have started this one in impressive fashion as they continue to build.

A 3-2 opening day win against Bromley and a 2-1 victory at Oldham’s Boundary Park have been the highlights, with their last three games all ending 1-1.

Some players to pick out include top scorer Rhys Browne, who has notched up five goals already, and experienced defender Sam Habergham, who won promotion from this level with Lincoln City in 2016/17.

Previous meetings

The two sides have met on just three occasions, two of them coming last season.

The first clash came in the first round of the 1979/80 FA Cup, as Blues ran out 1-0 winners at Wealdstone’s old ground, Lower Mead in Harrow.

There was just one goal between the teams last season, as Southend took a point from Grosvenor Vale last August and Browne’s winner earned the points for the Stones in April.

From the boss

Maher said: “Wealdstone have started ever so well.

They have some dangerous players we need to be wary of.

“We’ve wanted a few more points and we should’ve had a few more. Something has got to turn for us – one or two decisions going our way or a bit of luck.”

Blues team news

Steve Arnold has been unable to train this week. He had a scan this week which didn’t reveal any structural damage, but he’s missed a lot of training.

Harry Taylor and Harry Cardwell have been out running, while Rhys Murphy has been joining in with some training sessions but not others due to his recovery programme.

Ref watch

The man in the middle at Grosvenor Vale will be Scott Tallis, who has taken charge of 43 National League fixtures across the last four seasons.

He took charge of three Blues games last season, the 4-0 defeat to Chesterfield, the 1-1 draw with Maidenhead, and the 1-0 win over Boreham Wood.

So far this season, he has shown 10 yellow cards and one red card in his three National League games, this being his first senior outing since Saturday, August 20.

Tallis’ assistants will be Jacob Lehane and Harley McKittrick, with the fourth official Shaun Farrer.

Tickets

Tickets can be purchased online from Wealdstone’s website here, and supporters are advised to do so in advance.

Tickets cost £17 for adults, £12 for concessions, £10 for 18 to 23-year-olds and £7 for under-18s. The Shrimpers Trust away coach leaves Roots Hall at 10:45am.

Elsewhere in the National League

All twelve National League games on Saturday kick-off at the same time, even the BT Sport-televised clash between Maidenhead and Gateshead, which is due to the international break.

Arguably the match of the day comes from the LNER Community Stadium as York host Notts County in a competitive fixture for the first time since 2016 – a win for the Minstermen would take them level on points with their visitors.

Elsewhere, leaders Chesterfield have a long trip to Maidstone, and Scunthorpe host Dorking looking to build on draws in their last two.

David Unsworth’s first game in charge of Oldham sees the Latics travel to Bromley.
