Who remembers League Division 4?

Dear me, 46 years ago & still remember that day like it was last week!. Us Leigh Comm 'chaps' were in the Spread Eagle around lunch time, when someone burst in & said there was a massive Brighton mob coming down Vic Ave.
We went out to have a look, & sure enough there were 100's of them by the Blue Boar. One second silence, then total chaos. P.P got nicked & thrown in a police car, which to his luck was being drove by an old mate of his!. He drove him to Southchurch, let him out & told him to stay away!. Total mayhem afterwards in the car park & Vic Ave, as you say it was mentioned on News at 10 that evening.
As for the away game on the Mon, typical one of those where everyone said they were going, & about 50 of us ( if that ) turned up. They had an even bigger crew at home, & those guys you mention were i'm sure Palace fans. How we got out of there in one piece i'll never know?.
FWIW P.P moved to Brighton in 78, still lives there now, & we still meet up 2-3 times per year. We discussed these games a couple of years ago, & he said their main crew back then, came from Shoreham, 2-3 miles west of the town.
Down Brighton in 74 , after the game about 30 Leigh Comm hammered about 50/60 Brighton at the railway station .

Plenty of happy memories watching the old Div 4 in the 70s. Nothing wrong with it, just don't want to stay in it too long now!

Thanks for this. One of my favourite games at the Hall and loved that second goal of Richard's hat-trick. I think it was from the second round of the FA Cup that year - a Friday night in early December.

The replay a few days later was pretty good too, other than the final result, the winners away at Newcastle in Round 3.

today,15.4.89..was sadly Hillsborogh,i went with my father and son(only ever time we went together),to Watch Exeter V Rotherham i think....a very sad day.
Also the away game at BHA (74)...
But another memorable game today was WATFORD away (0-0),it was first(WFC) v second(us),loads of things went on before and after the game,i still cannot get over how the Police pushed -kept all the Southend fans in such a small area. That could have been a smaller "Hillsborough". The game was the "big one" shown on BBC match of the day,i think....that was 1978

Wasn’t that 1-1 at Watford?

Think Watford went 1-0 up before the equalizer? We were sitting not far from messrs Little and Large.

Wrexham won Divison 3 and Bolton Division 2 that season, what a turn around for both clubs since then. Forest were Division 1 winners.

You could well be correct, think ive seen the goal on the Shr.Zone!!
I went to Wrexham v SUFC,27.04.76
It ended,i think, 2-2....after drinking too many Wrexham ales in the pub next to the ground, had to use the toilet three times...and each time missed a goal, only saw one!!!!

Hi Ozzie,
Yes I was there and our team line up was as follows:- Trevor Roberts, Pat Wright, Owen Simpson John Kurila, Maurice Kyle, Joe Jacques, Peter Hunt, Billy Best, Bill Garner, Phil Chisnall & Mike Beesley. Sub:Dave Chambers. Att: 4,911. (Pat Wright & Maurice Kyle were on loan players from Derby County & Oxford United). As you quite rightly said Billy Best scored all four goals which included a first half hat-trick in just four minutes. (Think this maybe the last time a Southend United player scored four goals in an away match in either league or cup?). Southend led 3-2 at half-time. Peterborough United's goals were scored Jim Hall, Ollie Conmy & John Wile.
I went to primary school with one of John Kurila’s sons and was very happy when I got offered a lift home from a school footie match one evening. Not so happy tho when the said John Kurila’s car ran out of petrol at the fire station by Blenheim Park. !

Could be??? 1-1.not sure,but a draw !!

It was 1-1, & the attendance was over 18,000. It was estimated we had 2-3,000 there, all crammed in on the side by there main stand.
Around 30 of us met up at Leigh Station, & obviously went by train!
Probably completely wrong, but think Alan Moody scored our goal?.

Bring back proper football league tables, home and away results.

According tor Wiki: gate 18,947, Ross Jenkins for Watford.
Keith Mercer was in the Watford side at that time....and provided the cross for Jenkins to score....also playing for Watford was Dennis Booth.

Today, two big games for us in the fourth
1972...we played at home to Cambridge, everyone, even the CUFC thought we would win...but being Sarfend,we cocked it up
I think about 18,000 turned up,also maybe a coach of CUFC fans did as well, who i remember near the end of the game were VERY worried, coz the North bank boys ended up in the South(they were in the South paddock),looking very angry and disappionted
Spud went in goal,it was a day that everything went wrong...but we only had to wait a few more day (Scuni)
Uptil then, this was our biggest day(maybe),our first promotion

The second was, today 1978 at home v Rochdale ,3-1 i think...i bet we let Dale go one up just to annoy us
Our next promotion
Come the final whistle, our fans were on the touchline pitch,South, west and North bank. When the final whistle blew,Blues and Dale players run off the quicker than Alan Wells..

I remember the Cambridge game , the North Bank was singing we hate Vasper , being the Cambridce goalkeeper when he could during the game he kept away from the North Bank goal standing on the 18 yard line . The last few minutes he kept looking over his shoulder at the screaming North Bank , when the final whistle blew he must of been the first player down the tunnel .
