I remember Alf Smirk once telling me that he couln't understand how Bobby Kellard or Ray Smith had ever made the grade as professional footballers.

No.Ray Smith a local lad who played for the club in the mid-60's and was then transferred to Wrexham.

I couldn't understand how someone who drank as much as Alf Smirk made the grade as a professional journalist.

Bobby Kellard was a fine player who played for England youth and had a good career for a number of clubs, most better than Southend. Injury brought his professional career to an end but I did referee a few of his amateur games when he retired and he could certainly still hit a ball very hard with a good degree of precision.

Ray Smith was an effective lower division journeyman footballer and I still recall vividly watching him get a hatful of goals against us for Wrexham at the Racecourse one evening.

Alf Smirk was a fool.
