I don't know how this season's transfers will pan out - but some seasons, we bought some absolute howlers. Take this from 97/98: (we sold some greats as well)

06/98 England Rob Newman DF Wigan Athletic
04/98 England David Whyte FW Bristol Rovers
02/98 England Simon Coleman DF Bolton Wanderers
01/98 Ireland Kevin Maher MF Tottenham Hotspur
01/98 England Richard Jobson DF Leeds United
01/98 Senegal Sada N'Diaye MF ESTAC Troyes
10/97 England Mark Beard DF Sheffield United
07/97 England George Parris MF Brighton & Hove Albion

Have there been worse seasons for transfers?

Rob Newman wasn't bad, Maher was quite bad initially but in the end you have to say that was a great signing

One out of nine! There's some terrible players there!

Oh yeah totally agree, was just providing citation that they weren't all bad. Some total dross there, one who went on to become our most successful captain sugar-coats it a bit though

Bit harsh on Mark Beard. Not everyone's cup of tea but got around 150 competitive appearances for us, so did his bit. Not a great player but not as bad as many would have you believe.
Richard Johnson was only a loanee and certainly enjoyed a good career after us. Think he made over 600 league appearances so did something right.

02/98 England Simon Coleman DF Bolton Wanderers

Jobson on loan was an outstanding signing. Shame we couldn't of made it perm.

Simon Coleman did OK, so did, as mentioned Mark Beard and Rob Newman. Kevin Maher was rubbish to start with, but more than made up for it. The rest indeed are a bit poo.

Some dross but surely not our worst signing season ever.

Rob played 75+ times and went on to become manager.
Maher went on to become a promotion-winning captain.
Jobson was pure class.
Beard won player of the season the year after we signed him.
Coleman played over 100 games for us.

I wasnt over keen on the striking squads assembled by our Phil. In particular the much vaunted pre- season signing of those 3 great strikers Barnard, Weston and Coulthirst, ( 7 goals between them in 68 appearances ) followed by Cassidy on loan, Pigott, JJ O Neill back on loan as a striker. Ellis Brown , Isaac Layne ( Development ? )
Add in separately Binnon, Ibenfeldt Not a great lot of fruit off the tree pickings that year

However Cox and Ranger, Demetriou, Mc Glashen much better, potentially great signings well done Phil and Co

Subsequently those top goalscorers Mooney and Hunt?

In a 442 of may years ago, Beard was voted the worst ever player by Both Millwall and Sheff Utd, at the time he was our reigning POY

IIRC the same survey had Brett Angell as both Everton and Sunderlands worst ever sigming
