82ask.com Question of the Day....

Q: Who has the best name in world football?

A: There are a number of contenders for the title of best name in football, but few have as good a name as Lierse’s Brazilian forward Credence Clearwater Couto (his parents were big fans!), Danger Fourpence (Caps United, Zimbabwe) or even Osa Ice Cream Guobadia (SC Schwanestadt, Austria).

AND...

There are great names in football all over the World. Celtic forward Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink takes his name from a 17th century intermarriage between two prominent families of the Enschede area of the Netherlands - The Vennegoor’s and The Hesselink’s. His surname is less a name, more a title; literally translated as Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.

Staying in Holland, what about Go Ahead Eagles’ Reza Ghoochannejhad (get that on the back of your shirt at 25p a letter!), Kees Kwakman (Roosendaal), Richmond Bossman (Telstar), or Marcel Van Der Sloot of TOP OSS? Does anyone remember former West Ham striker Marco Boogers?

Brazil has always produced great names, but few can compete with Spartak Moscow’s Mozart Santos Batista Jnr (known simply as ‘Mozart’) or Lyon forward Frederico Chaves Guedes (aka Fred).

A special prize must also go to last season’s Kaiserslautern manager - Wolfgang Wolf, who was manager of Wolfsburg between 1998 and 2003. It puts Arsenal’s Arsene to shame!

Strange names are not limited to foreign lands though. What about former England Internationals Segal ******* and Harry Daft? Or Bradford City’s Dean Windass? Portsmouth’s Lomano Tresor Lua-Lua, or Sunderland’s Trinidad International Stern John?

Other great names 82ASK found on its travels include Nigerian forward Thankgod Amaefule (PAE Veroia, Greece), Have-A-Look Dube (Njube Sundowns, Zimbabwe) and Stephen Sunny Sunday (Polideportivo Ejido). Bongo Christ is Congolese international striker, and Johnny Moustache plays for the Seychelles. Australia even have a goalkeeper by the name of Norman Conquest.

However, the record for the team with the most great names has to be CAPS United of Zimbabwe. Not only do they have the aforementioned Danger Fourpence, but his team-mates include Givemore Manuella, Gift Makolonio, Limited Chicafa and Method Mwanyazi.
