Just seen that Kevin Davies has been released. My question is would you be happy if he joined Southend?

I know he is in the twilight of his career, but he still did a good job at Preston last season. I know he doesn't have the pace but he provides something different, similar to what Goater offered a few years ago.

He could definitely work with the younger strikers and help them improve.

Thoughts?

4 goals in 70 appearances for Preston...

As a coach, perhaps. But not as a player!

Why anyone would want a 38-year-old who has scored about three goals in two years is utterly beyond me. Wouldn't touch him with a barge pole.

Not for me - would be expensive and we need 3/4 strikers who we know will score goals. Davies' recent record shows he isn't much of a goalscorer any more.

Wouldn't mind the experience for younger strikers to learn off of. But not as a player, going to need a 15/20 goals a season striker at least and wouldn't want Davis taking up budget that could be used to attract better

He's a much, much better player than Goater was. Also just made 20 appearances for a team who just got promoted from this division. We've not a chance of signing him for other reasons but yeah if geography and money weren't a factor and Phil Brown was happy he could use him then I don't see why not.

there is no way Kevin Davies is / has been a better player then Goater was! Sorry but I just don't buy that.

If was coming in as a coach then possibly, but as player I think he would just use up valuable budget.

Shaun Goater was a lower-league clogger who specialised in scoring goals off of his arse/knee/shin. He admits it himself. He was also subject to a lot of abuse and heckling from our fans for much of his year with us - something that has been glossed over with revisionist history now ten years later because of the promotion and the way that he retired.

Kevin Davies played 444 Premier League games for three different clubs over a couple of months shy of 15 years and went for over £10m in transfer fees.

It is laughable to suggest that Davies isn't by far the better footballer.

As mentioned above...........too slow....expensive on the salary front.....would get sunburnt a lot in the Deep South

Why does everyone think he'd be expensive? He's out of contract and can only command a salary that a prospective employer is willing to pay.

If his demands are too high, he won't get a new club.

Fully agree.
Haven't checked the stats , but don't recall him being a prolific scorer in the PL.
However , what he did bring was a huge presence , both in the air and the ability to hold the play up and bring others into the game.
One England cap , but think he was unlucky not to get more.
Always a handful against top defenders.
I guess there is a big chance that he has now 'gone' , but as his game was never about speed etc , I think it probably matters a little less.
As for comparing Shaun Goater to Kevin Davies , then I think it is the chalkiest chalk versus the cheesiest cheese IMO.

Would 100% take him.

If we are bringing in three strikers, which everyone seems to suggest, I'd be more than happy for Davies to be one of them.

Not for me thanks! We've tried this since Goater with experienced (paceless) players and it hasn't worked. Freedman, Harris, Eastwood, Barnard etc and Davies is slower than them all put together. Let's stick to younger, hungrier players please Phil!

Corr didnt have pace and scored 1 in 3. James Walker was young hungry and pacy. I know which of the two Id want in the team.

Pace is great to have, but its not the be all and end all.
