A Bit of Fun Your favourite ever Southend XI

Maher, McDonough and about 100 others lined up hoping that others don’t notice. I did this last time around but quite simply for every line up there’s dozens of players I’d feel gutted at leaving out.

GK was tough but the more I think about it I'm not sure I've seen better than Bentley in goal. Sammy, Royce came close obviously.
My dad would put Cawston in goal, just before my time though.
As others have said some ridiculous players I've left out.
Keith Jones
David crown
Mike Marsh.
Also I would like to say my favourite squad of all time is easily those that played through the peak ratty slag era....many still here today, iconic doesn't cover it, wes, hobbo, cards, Taylor, noor, cav etc al.....Will always be legends, their obscene commitment helped save this club.

This is my favourite XI as opposed to what might be considered the best XI. These are just the players I have loved because of their attitude and commitment as well as their ability.

Flahavan

Moody
Cusack
 Barrett

Scott-Morriss
Poutney
Laverick
Otulakowski
Otto

Best
Collymore

Subs -
Sansome
Ford
Eastwood
P. Clarke
Townsend
Bridge
Tilson

And in a 3-5-2 formation with Maher as manager

Tough one, but here goes:

Sansome

Dean Austin, Spencer Prior, Adam Barrett, Chris Powell

Andy Ansah, Peter Butler, Steve Tilson, Ricky Otto

Stan Collymore, Freddy Eastwood

Subs
Dan Bentley
Paul Clark
Andy Edwards
Mark Gower
Keith Jones
Brett Angell
Shaun Goater

Couldn't find room for some greats like Crown, Francis, Leonard and many others.

In the 60 odd years of watching Southend this is my all time favourite team, who were capable of taking on anyone in the football league, as they proved when the took on Chelsea in the League Cup the following season, narrowly losing one nil.

1 John ROBERTS
2 Ray TERNENT
3 Alex SMITH
4 Dave ELLIOTT
5 Brian ALBESON
6 Joe JACQUES
7 Terry JOHNSON
8 Billy BEST
9 Bill GARNER
10 Gary MOORE
11 Bernie LEWIS
12 Peter (Spud) TAYLOR

A few hard decisions, particularly in the wide positions, but this is what I'd go for:

Flahavan; Jupp, Peter Clarke, Barrett, Coker; Gower, Timlin, McCormack, Laurent; Eastwood, Corr

Subs: Bentley, Moshni, Leonard, Maher, Hurst, Cox, Mark Phillips

Couldn't resist

Show how old you are without sharing how old you are competition... !
