I've just spoken to Cricko who has kindly approved this thread going on the Chit Chat forum

We are seeking your help to give a former Shrimper a helping hand.

Bobby King played for Southend as our left full back for three seasons in the mid 1960's, making 86 appearances and scoring twice.

The Scot, who we had signed from Glasgow Rangers, then went on to play for Romford and he still lives locally with his wife Kathleen. However, they have recently had some very difficult times, with Kathleen now unable to walk and Bobby himself having just come out of hospital and using a walking frame.

We were told about their predicament by their new gardener Vicky who wondered whether we might be able to help in any way.

The King's love their small garden but it has been somewhat neglected in recent times as they found it more and more difficult to manage and, now housebound, they are unable in its current state to enjoy it. A key need is to build a retaining wall, to make the area nearest the house easier to access, and to undertake some planting.
Vicky will manage the work that needs to be done, but if anyone has building skills who is able to donate their time to construct a retaining wall we would love to hear from you. We would also like to raise some funds to pay for the materials and planting needed and to give them, we hope, a lovely surprise.

If you know Bobby or Kathleen please do not tell them about this. If our appeal is successful we will, with Vicky and one of Bobby's former team-mates, visit them on 3rd August to let them know about this. Vicky is sure they will be absolutely thrilled.

If you might be able to help with the wall building please contact suepassoc@gmail.com to obtain more details.

If you would like to make a donation to help fund some of the costs involved please make your donation by clicking on this Shrimpers Trust link (which will first take you to the Bobby King page where you'll then in the article see a donation link to click on):

All donations please should be made by Sunday 2nd August 2020.

Any help/donations would really be appreciated as we would love SUEPA/the Shrimpers Trust (SUEPA is part of the Trust) and the Shrimperzoners to be part of a fans collective effort to show a former Shrimper that we care and that his time with us is not forgotten.

Thank you, and we will of course let you all know what happens

Dear All,
Thank you to everyone who has donated so far - it really is much appreciated.
To date we have raised £465 which is great, and wonderfully too we also have an offer of help to build a retaining wall.
The money raised so far is possibly just sufficient to help get the materials needed for the wall - if there is anyone else out there who would like to donate to perhaps then allow us to buy a few plants that would be lovely
The link to the donate facility on the Shrimpers Trust website is as in my initial post above.
We will be sure to let you all know the final outcome including our visit to surprise Bobby on Monday.
The power of the Zone!
Cheers

Never heard of him myself Pete, then again you are very old ? .....Donated..

The early/mid sixties the thin blue striped shirts he was a left back and played with the likes of Peter Goy, John Neal, Terry Bradbury , Bobby Gilfillan Ray Smith, Mike Beesley etc,

and yes Today I feel very very old

Thanks folks for the further donations so far, brilliant to see. Will let all know final total after weekend (the donations campaign on this runs thro to Sunday) and put up some pics after see Bobby on Monday.
We can do so much with SUEPA and this is just one example.
If you are not yet following SUEPA on Facebook or Twitter please take a look, lots of posts of late re new signings (some really great ones this week already) plus news of a little social on Monday afternoon next week too. Work is actively going on with the PFA to see if we can extend what we do plus ( the dull but in a way exciting bit) the mother of all databases is being put together at the mo which will help us target and attract more old players.
Cheers
Andy

Don't worry Pete, as Whitney Houston once sang "I Will Always Love You" and after all those years of spending so much time together and in some quite hairy situations too, old or not nothing is gonna change that. Love Ya Nobbler.x

It was lovely to meet Bobby King yesterday (who now becomes our 249th member) and surprise him with news of our appeal which raised £655 to help with some work in his garden, it will make a big difference.
Frankie Banks was with us and gifted Bobby a Southend United shirt which he quickly put on and wears with pride, he loved hearing stories of his time at the club again, many of which we received from you all through various sources and relayed to him.
A huge thanks to all who donated including SUEPA followers and Shrimperzoners - it is great to all work as one.
A very kind person too has also offered to provide his services for free to build the retaining wall needed, and Vicky of Rayleigh Gardeners, who contacted us about Bobby in the first place, will help manage things through to completion. We will post up some pictures when the work is done. You are all wonderful people.
SUEPA - creating new memories. If you are not yet following SUEPA (part of the Shrimpers Trust) on Twitter or Facebook please do as that is where we regularly post up news (99% of which is all positive stuff so it's good for the soul) and later on this eve we'll also post up news on SUEPA Facebook/Twitter of a very special event, our 250th member - a real face from the past for those of you around in the 80's!).

Recall our appeal last month to help out Bobby King to which you responded so magnificently with your donations? Well today those top folk at Suregreen Limited
https://www.facebook.com/suregreenl...lXt8uf6791Ws8EgEHkhLm8OfHWE-1Lviw&__tn__=kK-R
have kindly agreed to supply the wood we need for his garden work without charge. How brilliant is that?

We had approached them as their prices were the best we could find as it was (do check them out if you are doing any garden work), and when they heard Bobby's story, well, John, Anthony and the Suregreen folk were only too pleased to help. This now leaves us with more money to buy soil and plants to help make Bobby's garden look a little bit more special. We hope that the work will commence in a couple of weeks or so and will keep you informed re how it all goes.
