Southend United's Under-18s won 3-2 this morning at Boots & Laces against Gillingham, their first home League win of the season. Jack Morris gave Blues the lead with a free-kick eight minutes in, Stuart O'Keefe doubled the lead on the half-hour and, after the visitors pulled level with two goal either side of half-time, trialist Harry Crawford (formerly a schoolboy with Tottenham Hostpur) netted the winner on 70 minutes. Rhys Henry was back from his work experience spell with BGB Southern League Premier Division Cheshunt, but centre-back Tom Hopkins has re-joined the non-League strugglers. They lost 2-0 today at Mangotsfield United.
Luke Thurlbourne remains on work experience at St Albans City, who continued their recent revival with a 4-1 home win in Blue Square Conference South against Basingstoke Town. The midfielder's display, as he recorded another 90 minutes, was described by the St Albans & Harpenden Review as "eye-catching", and he almost scored when the Basingstoke 'keeper tipped his low shot around the post after a one-two with Paul Hakim. The only sour point was his fourth caution of the St Albans campaign.
James Lindie was heavily involved in Harlow Town's midweek draw with high-flying Horsham. The Hawks drew 1-1, with the striker almost setting up James Bunn for an early goal, then collecting a booking for a tough tackle on 36 minutes. He continued to pose a threat throughout his 90 minutes on the field, with Bunn grabbing a late leveller. David Obaze sat on the bench, but was expected to make a return today with former Shrimper Leo Roget out as they lost 1-0 to Ashford Town (Middlesex).
Finally, Nathan McDonald was today named the Shrimpers Trust SUFC Youth Team Player of the Month for February after a good month between the sticks, keeping a clean sheet behind an inexperienced team at Barnet in a 0-0 draw. McDonald received his award at half-time in today's 2-0 League One win over Luton Town.
