rest of photo with Big Bill
Many Thanks "Chairman Trigg" you have made an old man very very happy, The joy on Billy's face along with that of Big Bill Garner and Terry Johnson is there for everyone to see, little did we know at that time how important that goal would turn out to be.

Freddy the first time around, when he was at his best. What a goal!

Sat 8th Apr. Southend v Blackpool 2-1 :Eastwood Guttridge 8,180.
Five games later and Southend were crowned champions. The crowd go wild, guess what they sing?

Some of Southend United's greatest moments to the sounds of Southend fan Alison Moyet's Blue.

Here are the lyrics she wrote, inspired by her time following Southend and also watching from the old North Bank.

BLUE
Do I have to go
Could I ever stay away
And you never know
Tonight our luck could change
And we'll be flying all the way (going all the way)
A late point and I'll be laughing
And Saturday won't seem so bleak
With you, Blue

Ever a stepping stone
Someone's Mickey Mouse affair
We're so unfashionable
But I'm not with you for your stylish hair
Or the seaside air (if we ever get there)
Tell me we've acquired a striker (Stanley)
And a lucrative sponsorship came through (on a free)
Will you, Blue
Can we not buy someone famous
And pull a crowd we can't contain at all
All true, Blue

Maybe we'll never tread the grass that grows around your feet
And you let us in for weighting tables like we live to feed
And not to eat (but we get a seat)
Three points and the living's easy
And every day's a Saturday
With you, true blue
Saturday

Oct 16th 1993. Southend 6 v Oxford 1.
A certain Dave Penney scores their consolation goal. A Mooney hat-trick, 2 for Otto and 1 for Edwards for us. Even tho the commentator said Bressington for the Edwards goal.

9th December 1995. Southend v Leicester. Ronnie Whelan was the manager and we finished 14th in Division One.
We had striker problems that season(sound familiar?), with Dave Regis the top scorer with 9 goals.

You can't copyright facts so you didn't need his permission; it is, of course, good protocol to acknowledge the source.

15th December 1990. Southend v 2nd placed Grimsby in Division 3. We would end up in 2nd place.
Tilly scores a cracker.

F.A.Cup 1st round 1997. A potential banana skin at Woking. We had a poor team with a poor manager.
So bad we were the underdogs for this one, especially as Woking had reached round 2 in the eight previous seasons, and we hadn't won a cup tie since 1993.

Tues 6th November 1990, Southend v Aldershot.
Now I wouldn't normally put a full game on here, but as we won 10-1, and Tilly gets a hat-trick, I think it's worth watching. You also get to see four from Brett Angell and one each from Benjy, Ansah and Prior. Yes it was only the Leyland Daf cup, but still very impressive. We went on to beat Reading 4-1 away, and then Maidstone 2-0 and Torquay 7-0 at home before being knocked out by Brentford.

Tues 25th September 2001 v Carlisle at home. Phil Whelan, Maher and Webb(Lol) scorers. Not a great picture full screen, but worth watching. I like the head tennis for our second goal. Also very rare to see an overhead kick goal for both sides.

1994-95. We are heading for relegation under Peter Taylor having just gone through a winless eleven game run. He is replaced by Steve Thompson which immediately sparks a turn in fortune and we finish 13th after winning 8 and drawing 2 of the last 12 games. Steve Thompson did an amazing job, but he hadn't signed a contract under Vic Jobson and was poached by Notts County. One of Vic's biggest mistakes was not to sort him a good contract at the end of the season. Instead we got Ronnie Whelan who cost an absolute fortune all in as player/Manager, and we were relegated in his second season.
Here is the start of the home form revival against Luton.
