(ex-Eastern National clippie).
People would drink an odd concoction called light 'n' mild for about 15p a throw. The 251 bus would leave Southend for a magical mythical place called 'Wood Green'.

The 151 also went there, of course, but straight up the A13 and not "around the houses" like the 251.The Eastern National canteen at Wood Green was neither magical nor mythical, unfortunately.
Twas my gap year (before the term was even coined).Tell that to the kids today and they'll never believe you.:cricko:
Iirc Back in the 70s the 151 went up the 13 to five bells , then to billericay up noak hill , and then followed the 251 route into London.
I rarely used the 151. Always the 251 or 254
And went a damn site nearer to my houseCertainly the 251 route was more scenic.

talking buses..
you could throw(money??) ,.what ever you wanted into a machine near the driver.
It photographed all the coins.
Game was ,to try and get the longest ticket..normally using as many little half pences you could find.
That was those days on the Southend Corp..light blue-cream buses.
Not to mention being able to smoke on buses.
And in the cinema, pub and just about everywhere else you care to think of! Always wondered how the cinema worked having one half smoking, one half not - odd!Not to mention being able to smoke on buses.
