I see Port Vale have signed 8 from abroad , in the past couple of weeks, from Portugal, France and Holland. Be interesting to see how they go . Unfortunately the dinghy we hired to row our scout to Canvey Island was turned back by border control

We have quite a few from aboard on board already - Adam Thompson is from Northern Ireland, so it is and Tims from Southern Ireland; Oxley is from across the northern border ............. etcetera etcetera ..........

I noticed that yesterday. They have a new foreign manager who seems to be only signing foreign players. Like you say will be interesting to see how they get on, they might struggle with the rough and tumble of lower league English football.
Didn't work for Notts Co!

Bristol Rovers have just loaned Luke James from Peterborough. Surprised we weren't in for him if Hunt is going. Highly rated a couple of years ago

Bradford sent him back early this season, looks like League 2 is his level and won't do much above that.

We now have centre back Gavin Gunning on trial from Dundee United.

Talented player with SPL and Championship experience. Still only 25 and nearly 200 games behind him. ROI U21 international.
So why would he be on trial with us? Read on...

I guess another one with something to prove- I guess if it weren't for this his next move would be back to the Championship.

We now have centre back Gavin Gunning on trial from Dundee United.
From Wikipedia;

Gunning returned to Dundee United in November 2015, signing a contract for the rest of the 2015–16 season. On 12 April 2016, Dundee United announced that Gunning had left the club by mutual consent, describing the decision as "a private matter". This came three days after a match against Inverness Caledonian Thistle during which Gunning, in what was described by the media as "a bizarre incident", had picked up the ball during play and walked off the pitch. He subsequently returned to the field to receive treatment for an injury before being substituted. It was reported that he had "sarcastically applauded" fans who verbally abused him over his conduct. Despite the club statement, manager Mixu Paatelainen subsequently clarified that while Gunning would not be considered for selection, he remained a Dundee United player and could return to training if he wished "or take an early summer holiday".

Doesn't look good.

Only a trialist. They rarely end up signing, more likely to make the numbers up during friendlies.

Doesnt sound like the kind of player who can play 40 odd games a season. Does seem we are really scraping the barrell at the moment whilst other teams are landing good players.

If fit then I think that he could be a quality signing - good age and plenty still to prove.

Prefer this scenario, as with Ranger, rather than someone coming to the end of their career and working their way down the football pyramid.

It’s the most bizarre act ever committed by a player who regularly indulges in ridiculous behaviour on the football field, usually when it comes to his duties as a defender. There’s no centre back in Scotland as eccentric as the Irishman, which is far from a good thing. You want your centre backs to blend in with the background, quietly going about their job of denying the opposing team. This characteristic could be forgiven if his presence, similar to former unorthodox defenders in the Scottish league, such as Marius Zaliukas at Hearts or Lorenzo Amoruso at Rangers, actually made the side better. Instead, he’s been consistently poor since returning to the club for a second spell. His positioning and decision-making have not been up to scratch. On counter-attacks, while the opposing striker races through on goal, Gunning can often be viewed as the stationary target 10 yards behind the play with his hand in the air. Regularly in the recent Dundee derby, match analyser Chris Sutton savaged him for such behaviour. Despite all this, he remains one of the first names on the teamsheet.

:excellent:

So few games in the last two years. A lot to prove to himself and us. I hope it is no more than a short term deal with options because on paper it appears a risk. Not saying a risk not worth taking but it needs to be a clever, mutually beneficial arrangement. Hope he joins and does well.
