Yes, in three successive seasons between 1922/23 and 1924/25. In those years there were six qualifying rounds and the First Round Proper was the equivalent to the Third Round Proper in the modern-day competition with only three rounds prior to the Quarter-Finals.

In 1922/23 we lost to Norwich City in a Fifth Round Qualifying replay, in 1923/24 we lost to Llanelly in Sixth Round Qualifying after defeating Clapton in Fifth Round Qualifying and in 1924/25 we lost to Reading in Fifth Round Qualifying.

In light of the various incidents at the game last night, I do hope that the FA (if, indeed, it is their responsibility) appoint a strong referee for the Cup match. Tension will surround the tie and the game will be the focus of much attention. Another referee like last nights and we could have a meltdown.

Pretty sure it will be the FA, hopefully in liaison with the appointing bodies for the main contributing leagues.
