Historical Programme Article

Quote[/b] (Hong Kong Blue @ Aug. 24 2006,12:44)]Our last League Cup win before Bournemouth.

That should certainly fit the historical category.

The home leg v Gillingham contained one of the greatest moments I have ever witnessed on a football pitch when two Gills defenders knocked each other out and looped the ball into the top corner for a fantastic slow motion oggie, made even funnier by the fact that they had already used 2 subs so then had to complete the game with 10 men. Ladies and gentlemen, that is why we keep going through the dark days mentioned in that thread the other day.
Althgough a certain CI City Shrimper gave the goal to Rob Newman!

My first ever serious post:

How about the story of the move back to Roots Hall in 1955. I believe the entire cost of the new ground was raised by the supporters club - many of whom even got their hands and flat caps dirty actually building the terraces...

Well before my time, but always makes me feel a bit proud anyway when I hear the old fellas talk about it...

It seems to me that if we are talking about a century united it should be more about times we don't remember scanning the whole 100 years, rather than recent games that we can all remember with ease.

Some of my suggestions would be:

The opening of Roots Hall is a good one.

What about the prewar 4-4 draw with Tottenham etc.

In the Kursaal era didn't we beat Derby 4-1?

After our 8 wins last year, the echo did a good peice on the previous record set in about 1927.

Cup games in the 1950s against Man City, Brum and Liverpool

The cup run of 1969 with the 9-0, 10-1 and 2-0 wins always worth a mention.

The Webb double promotion.

and finally the Tilley double promotion.

Match reports can be finding by looking at the Old Southend Standards on microfilm at the Library which can be printed, programmes can usually be found pictures more of a problem though.

Many thanks DODTS,

All these will be covered - I'm going to try and spread everything out as much as possible - so that certain era's aren't repeated in consecutive programmes.

A pivotal part in our recent history

Probably mentioned several times before, but if Tes hadn't gone in goal he probably wouldn't have injured himself and would of started the next match upfront, instead some young lad we had on loan made his debut.. to quote my dad "Who's this bloody Freddy Eastwood, more non-league rubbish"

I have some black and white photos of the two games against Liverpool, including the South Bank full with the snow pouring down.

I also have a programme from the home game signed by both squads.

The West Bank transfer was closed due to crowd trouble against Chelsea in 1972. However, you could still transfer if you waited until the gates opened by going out of the North behind the West and back in the South. There was also a door from the North Bank which led to a tunnel under the East stand that came out in the South. Not many people knew about that though!

Oh the days, when all the kids used to run onto the pitch at the end......

Ive got a decent Press Photo of the liverpool game, together with the press report.

Micky Laverick attempting an overhead kick in the snow with phil thompson looking on..can email the image to you if you wish..

I think the access from North to South was stopped after the cup game against Aston Villa in 1970, which Blues won 1-0.

Before the game started there were a few brawls on the South Bank and a threatened pitch invasion by Villa fans.

IIRC there was a barrier built soon after which stopped the practice of switching from North to South depending which way Blues were kicking.

Would it be possible to scan and e-mail these to me??

The pictures have to be reasonably big though, to come out clear in the programme.

The Man City & Bert Trautmann story was featured in the Sunderland issue.

However, I've had some good responses with the Liverpool stuff - thanks all!

I don't know if this any use, but here's a little bit on the Kursaal / Stadium :

My Grandfather and Uncle used to walk from their Home in Rochford to and from the Kursaal, they was poor public transport and it was expensive so walking was a popular way of getting to games even if you lived a fair distance.

Everyone loved the Kursaal close to the pitch and a lively atmosphere, but when the move came to the Stadium it was not popular you were a long way from the pitch and the atmoshere inevitably dropped, perhaps this was one of the reasons why their was so much effort from the fans to move to Roots Hall.

I was born in Maldon Road, which is behind one of the goals in the stadium. On matchdays people living in Maldon Road would keep fans bikes safe in their back gardens for a few pence, some had a lively little sideline going.

Hope these snippets of some use

The Anglo Italian venture. A game against Fiorentina and our first win on foreign soil in a proper competition against Cosenza would both be worth a mention.

reaching the fifth round of the cup in the mid 70's, staying behind after the game v cardiff in rd 4 to listen to the next round draw over the tannoy and we all go mad at learning we draw the div 1 champs derby away

04/05/70

Fiorentina 1 Southend United 0
Att: 8,769

Fiorentina weren't actually champions at the time of the game; that honour in 1970 was bestowed on Cagliari Calcio, their one and only scudetto. Fiorentina finished in 5th spot, nine points off top spot.
