Martin backs Brown

How can he be finished? He's only just 30 and should be in his prime. You don't turn 39 and all of a sudden lose the good finishing skill that you had in your 20s. He needs games, match fitness, good service and confidence

... no, you lose it much earlier.

It’s just an opinion, or more a suspicion, I don’t know for sure. I never thought he was a great footballer was just able to get into the right positions and put the ball away, I think he has lost a bit of pace (not that he had a lot to start with) and he is struggling to get in those positions now. When he does he’s not finishing it. There has been a small improvement lately and I think he should have his chance but I do suspect he’s finished, Freddy was finished at 30, it happens.

Barnard never had a great record for scoring goals before he joined us. He was a hard-working and technically strong player with a good finish on him. For us the most immediate attribute that he had was that hard-working attitude. He'd chase down defenders constantly, often force them into mistakes and had the stamina to do it for 90 minutes.

In my opinion his goalscoring record was aided by having strike partners who would create space for him either with their pace (Theo Robinson & James Walker) or by holding the ball up and drawing in defenders (Alex Revell).

He then went off to Southampton and again often prospered from the good work done by Rickie Lambert.

I think that is what he is lacking now and hopefully he and Barry Corr can strike up a good partnership over the rest of the season.
