The masks puzzle me , we were told that masks wouldnt protect the wearer from covid but would limit the transmission for those who were infectious but not showing symptoms (those with symptoms should isolate) . So I assume its a fear of any infection the wearer has, rather than covid
As YB states it goes back to SARS. Aside from that in many Asian countries, notably Japan, it has been the done thing to wear marks when you have a common cold, partly as a courtesy. However mask wearing in HK is at another level completely. The whole Covid saga was massively over managed and poorly managed here striking the fear of god into far too many and deserving of a thread all on its own. The paranoia that still exists for some is extraordinary. When you see entire families masked up on a waterfront stroll at 30C plus with maximum humidity you know something is badly wrong. More understandable on buses and MTR (Tube) but still must freak out a few tourists.
