Matches at Meadow Lane commenced in 1931 when a goal by Jim Shankly gave us a share of the points. He was, of course, one of the five Shankly footballing brothers, one of whom became rather better known than the others. Over the years we’ve played them 52 times in League matches, having won 23, drawn 9 and lost the other 20.
Saturday's match will be refereed by Gareth Rhodes from York. As a youngster he had trials with professional clubs and represented West Riding County FA at U18 level. He didn’t make it into the professional game but went on to play for Tadcaster Albion and Selby Town in the Northern Counties East League. Injuries brought his playing career to a premature end and he started refereeing in 2008. After 10 years he reached his current level of Panel Select referee and is now in his fourth season at National League level. His very first match, Gateshead v Dover was cardless – a feat he has not managed again in any of his subsequent 51 games !
This season’s 7 matches have seen a high 29 yellow and 3 red cards. Somewhat unusually, the last 5 red cards he’s shown have all been to home players.
Obviously, he has never refereed Southend before, but he was Fourth Official for away matches at Sunderland and Bolton and the home match against Forest Green. This will be his 6th County match having overseen their home wins against Torquay and Solihull and away draw at Stockport in previous seasons and this season their 5-0 win at Barnet and 3-2 defeat at Halifax.
Assisting will be Michael D’Aguilar from Stafford who I thought was on the Football League list (maybe easing his way back from injury as I think it unlikely he’d have been “relegated”) and Reece Davies, the Derbyshire FA Referees Development Officer. Fourth Official is Ben Robinson also from Stafford.
