It really is difficult to think of a less imaginative and inspiring appointment to start the new season with !
The referee for Saturday is the very same one who did the final game of last season bringing the curtain down on what was probably the worst half a season of home football ever at Roots Hall. One win from 11 matches and just the seven goals.
So it's two consecutive League games at Roots Hall for Rob Lewis, making the journey from Shrewsbury for his fifth visit to Roots Hall as a referee. This is the fourth season of his second spell as a League referee, having lost his place in 2008 primarily due to injury.
One of our shorter officials, his first visit to the Hall was for the 2-0 home victory over Luton (Bailey and a late goal from Walker) in 2007/8. Previously he had refereed our 3-0 defeat at Derby in the Championship the season before (five cautions in that match; unusually four to the home side).
More recently he presided over the dreadful 0-0 with Aldershot towards the end of the 2010/11 season. His performance, whilst only average, was rather better than that of the players. He cautioned Grant and Corr and one of theirs.
His third previous home game came on a Friday night last December, when 3 second half goals (yes, three goals at home!!) gave us the 3 points against Chesterfield. No cards.
His other appearance was that final game of last season - the defeat against Morecambe, which saw some rather odd decisions, especially in the second half.
Mr Lewis' main claim to fame is the fact that he was the assistant referee involved in the incredible decision when Tottenham's Pedro Mendes' long shot at Old Trafford was about two yards over the line but no goal was given. Hope he doesn't have any close calls like that to make on Saturday.
He refereed 22 matches last season with a couple of longish breaks presumably down to injury. He showed a decidedly average number of yellows (67) and no reds. Don't expect too much and you may not be disappointed.
Not to be confused with famous referee R. Lewis from Great Bookham, who refereed the Hillsborough tragedy match (and our 4-4 draw with Northampton).
Assisting him will be Ashvin Degnarain from Islington and John O'Brien, also from London. The fourth official, once again, will be Lee Venamore from Maidstone.
