Problems for the NHL....

The NHL, for lack of a better word, is screwed. The players make loads of money, but many NHL franchises are having problems paying this amount of money. NHL players contracts are equivalent to those in other professional sports, but the NHL draws smaller crowds, smaller TV contracts, less advertising revenue, etc. than the other mainstream pro sports. This is even worse for the remaining Canadian franchises because the American dollar is so much stronger than its Canadian counterpart. Most, if not all, Canadian franchises sign players to contracts based on US money, but the income for these teams is based on Canadian dollars. In order to keep the NHL afloat, the players would need to take huge paycuts, but the players are unwilling to do this (for obvious reasons) so I'd be very surprised if there was an NHL season this year at all.

Just see this on the BBC website. Seth? Canada Shrimper? You got anymore information from across the pond about all this?

Personally, I think wage capping should be brought back into football.....
Wage capping has existed in some form in the Football League for the past couple of seasons, Hils. Most clubs are now restricted to a salary budget linked to a percentage of total turnover (60% for Third Division clubs last season), preventing smaller clubs like Southend United from spending beyond their means.

Mike, IIRC the division 4 wage cap is technically voluntary. A club is still entitled to spend as much on wages as it likes, however if it spends beyond the 60% they lose their entitlement to certain incomes. Its therefore only commercial reality which prevents clubs from paying excessive wages.

Surely the players will have to back down?

Even if they have to reduce their wages by 50% there can't be any other league in the world that could match that?

On another topic, why did/do so many hockey players have shocking mullets? Is it the easter european connection or what?

Matt, I though that only applied to last season? Hasn't the whole Football League adopted the policy now?
