Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-2 York City 5th Round ISUZU FA Trophy

Poor old Kev and co will be damned by some for not fielding our strongest team but as a manager he has difficult decisions to make if we are to manage the Tuesday/Saturday dance card that we now have in front of us. One thing is for certain. come Tuesday night Cardwell, Gus, Husin and Bridge will all have a bit more in the tank for another Yorkshire battle. I just hope beyond hope that it won't be our last Tango in Halifax.

No momentum when they're knackered/injured - and you get strain injuries with too many games in a short space of time.
Chopping and changing carries its’ own risks though. You lose the flow. Plus, players want to play every match do they not? Cardwell looked almost as chuffed to be on the sidelines as Powell seemed to be to be in the first 11. Not a happy looking Callum.

That made me think.
Has anyone got/seen a pic of CP laughing out loud. He's one serious dude!
Players are like boxers: often it's better decisions are made for them.

Have to admit that with the prospect of a half decent pay day and Wembley appearance only two games away Kev made a big mistake today with his set up but is what it is.

Credit to York though, they were in control all game. We couldn’t buy a goal today.

Man, where have you been? Does news take that long to reach Peru? We can't buy a goal - we can't buy anything. There ain't no money in the bank, Frank.

"Reasonable chance of money arriving but it will be close. We aren't there yet"

FFS!

That is really concerning.

Ron has always had an inscrutable poker face when playing HMRC but he sounds like he is sitting on one cheek here.

We could have been out there for four hours today and not scored.

Hyde was playing walking football again and sorry but Powell just isn’t up to it. A pretty poor performance all round but can hardly blame them giving the negative atmosphere around the place.

Lots of talk about the need to rotate because of the Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday situation but fixture congestion is nothing like it used to be back in previous decades. For example Easter weekend usually meant three games in four or five days. In April 1973 we played Good Friday and Easter Saturday at home, winning 5-0 and 5-1 before a trip to Halifax the following Tuesday. Guthrie scored five goals and Best four. Is it really asking too much of professional footballers nowadays to play twice a week? Cue posts saying how the game has changed but has it?

Well that sucks.

Still, theres always going out of business to look forward to.

Blondy was our man of the match. Certainly not his fault that we allow fee headers from corners in areas Harry C normally defends. If he is not on the pitch then someone else should be doing that job.

With no West stand open and our team selection means 2 advantages to York before a ball is kicked. Then we don't manage a shot on goal. Even when Harry did come on we didn't supply one decent ball up to him, let alone a cross.

Bad day all round and puts us under more pressure on Tuesday. The only consolation is Wrexham will be on a Saturday.

If we had taken it seriously today I’m sure it would been a different result

Yes, remember those two home games well.

What to say opportunity lost for a Wembley appearance ,but with league fixtures now coming at an express rate i can understand Kev and co resting some players and giving some who have been warming the bench a lot lately some valuable match time , whats more important this FA TROPHY or a chance to get into the playoffs should we still have a football club come March .I know what i would choose and that route even though harder still has a wembley appearance as an incentive also .

I had hoped we would field our strongest team from the start. However, I completely understand why we didn't. Harry Cardwell is such an important player for us, have most forgotten that he has not long returned from a serious injury. I am convinced Jack is carrying an injury of sorts. Fonguck is a more than adequate replacement for Husin. Demi for Gus, that is understandable as well, given he has just returned to the side.

Changes in personnel maybe, but not a change of system ,which works well for us. Our problems were up front, Hyde didn't look interested or work hard enough and Powell just isn't good enough, although he works hard for the team. With Wreh and Murphy both injured, options are very limited, even more reason to wrap Cardwell in cotton wool.

More concerned that Lopata may now miss a few games. With Lomas injured options are again limited, although it was interesting that it was Taylor who dropped into the back 3 and looked very comfortable.

Always disappointing to lose, but if we are to sneak into the play offs then we will need everyone up to speed with the run of fixtures coming up. Notts County, Torquay, Barnet, Chesterfield, Wrexham and Boreham Wood coming up in quick succession. Now that will be a real test of the progress that has been made.

Just a word about Blondy. Can we remember he is a young lad starting out in the game. He has been thrown in the deep end and is just about swimming. Yes decision making can be a bit iffy, but he is getting better and one save today in the 1st half was outstanding.

Home games against Chesterfield & Port Vale?. Even worse 74-75 season when we played 3 times in 4 days. Brighton home on Good Friday, Walsall & Brighton away on the Sat & Bank Hol Mon. ( the Brighton games could generate a post of their own! ).
Has the game changed since then?. Players today have more muscle bulk & better diets than back then, yet seem to suffer more long term injuries than then?.
