As someone said earlier in the thread - we are going to be more effective on good pitches. We are picking up points where we would once have been beaten and are very much in the mix.
With teams we are very capable of beating to come, the rain must stop at some point and pitches dry out.
We can do it!

Sunny in Hockley today, if only the game was at 3pm today :winking:

Agree - this game sapped my desire to watch SUFC ; I left the ground wishing I had done something else with my evening.

Why all the bleating about their tactics - firstly I have seen us do similar at many away games over the years ; secondly we only had to score to make them change.

On reflection , I thought we played some decent stuff at times , especially on a pitch not suited for a good passing game.
I've seen most home games this season and thought Newport were probably the worst side I've seen , although I take on board the Newport fans comments that they are without key strikers.
Another clean sheet which was good , but thought Phillips was pretty average last night and hope Prosser is back soon.
Think Laird , Clifford and Gomis need some games now as midfield all in need of a rest.
Thought the ref was very good and I liked the way he played the advantage and then brought it back.
My biggest dissapointment was the time wasting from the very first minute.
In fact this is something I hate in every game to a certain degree ( from us and against us ) and really wish this was something that can be cut out of the game , but not sure how it is enforced ?

Usually a yellow card given for constant time wasting. I reckon their keeper must have made the majority of their possession as it took him about half a minute to take every goal kick and out of his hands.

Every throw aswell they were doing it from the start of the game.

Every throw aswell they were doing it from the start of the game.

And it was so damn obvious because someone would pick it up make out they were going to throw it then look like he forgot the fact they had a long throw specialist. Then he would spend half an hour cleaning the ball, this happened everytime.

Bit harsh...poor side...good enough to p*ss all over your boys not so very long ago.
What you should be mindful of is that Newport have just come up for the conference and are finding their feet as a newcomer to the FL.
Also let me supply a few facts ref this "poor" side:
1. We have not paid a single penny for any player except Jolley who came to us last year for the princely sum of £30,000.
2. Top scorer from last yr (Aaron O'Connor injured entire season and still out).
3. Top scorer this season (Chris Zebrowski injured and out for past 4 mths and still out).
4. Best forward ( Connah Washington sold to Peterborough days ago)...destroyed your boys at our place.
5. Captain broke his leg in our victory at Brighton in League cup ...first time on bench this evening.
6. Only money signing (Jolley) been out for much of the season.
7. Max Porter out injured for whole of last season and only returned to bench last game and tonight.
8. Centre back tonight,Andy Sandell out all season until three games ago. Key player last Season.
9.Your usual injuries to most of the squad to contend with on top of the serious long term injuries to the key players mentioned above...too many to list here.
10. Last 4 home games postponed because of wet weather. Halted any momentum built before Xmas. Those of you who travelled to Rodney Parade would testify that Newport was quite different to the side you now call poor...they put on a great attacking display ...ask around.

On a positive note for us...some of our key players are returning to the bench...but both of our main strikers are still out. Pretty soon they too will be back(few weeks)...and be warned...out of the 20 games to play ...we have 13 at home and just 7 on the road. Pretty sure , if our strikers return,as anticipated we will be in the mix with Sarfend.

Oh...and incidentally, I reckon Sarfend are a more than useful side, with a good mgr...and will definitely be in play offs or possibly in the automatic places come the end of the season.

Good luck.

Hi and welcome to our board.

Having reflected, may be I was a bit harsh, but on last night's showing imo I think Newport did look a little short of ideas, and appeared to come for the point and wasted a lot of time.
That said the conditions did not help to make it a great football spectacle and on last night's performance we were also not at our best, so a draw was probably about right.
As others have said, re financial problems we have written the book on them - so we know what it is like to operate under financial/embargo restraints and some.
Respect to all your travelling support for making the long journey on a Friday night and wishing that you can do us a favour against Fleetwood please :winking: and as you say if we should meet again in the playoffs lets hope both our teams will put on a better footballing display as we all know they can.
Best wishes.

Excuses, excuses. Good teams find ways to win no matter what the conditions.

Got to agree, we weren't good enough to win.

Talking about good teams finding ways to win, how did you lot get on today? :winking:

I thought the boys played really well against all odds (pitch and a poor Newport team) on a proper surface we would wipe the floor with teams like newport, as we did with chesterfield.
What concerned me more was last year I gave up my season ticket due to work commitments so I attend every other home game therefore I tend to mix around where I go in the ground. Last night I we went into the east stand B. well I couldn't beleive the abuse our players were getting, starker was being booed before he came on!!!
Frankly I not sure why you bother going If you're going to boo your own players, shocking.
On another day and a decent pitch we would wipe the floor with teams like Newport

UTB

I too sat away from my usual position and some of the abuse he got from a section of the south upper was shocking. Bearing in mind this is a team who have been unbeaten in the league for a month and a half and are fifth in the league, plus the scores were level. I can only shudder at the thought of how much venomous bile those fans would shout if we were struggling. We have some absolute morons as fans unfortunately. It should be obvious to anyone Straker is a confidence player and his was shot to pieces within minutes of coming on, which probably helps explain his poor display.

The abuse and language was shocking towards our own players, and i'm no prude as i spent most of my time watching the blues in the 70s. Frankly, after last nights game I'm actually thinking about attending away games only as all of these morons do not attend! Those of you that go away will know what I mean.

Think it depends where you sit. I sat in the West yesterday and didn't hear any abuse of our own players, a fair amount of shouting at the ref for the time wasting from Newport.

Away games are better, but you still get some idiots who want to just abuse players .... before kick off.

I heard similar on Tuesday (away):'( and at Strakes, called monkey **** as well as other things. What is the matter with these people.

Poor old Straker does get picked on a bit.He can be frustrating at times but people have to remember that some players really do suffer confidence problems after being abused.A man at the game last night was shouting for Straker to come off when he had barely been on the pitch for 5 minutes! I have always thought getting on your own players backs is counter productive

Part of the reason is that he is so obviously visible, when Hursty drops out of the game (as he does at times) he is fairly anonymous and goes unnoticed. It isn't fair and as you say I have no doubt it does affect him negatively.

Hard to disagree with any of the above. Team deserve credit for trying to play football on a difficult pitch in very difficult conditions and playing their third games in 6 days. Felt we needed a goal in the first half to help with our confidence. The better half of the pitch was the North Bank end and with the wind in our favour was hoping for some sort of advantage at half time. Could and should have had at least one goal with the post and keeper denying us. Thought Barney did well with some nice touches and lay offs and also decent work rate. Corr also battled hard. The likes of Barney and Fred who I thought played well will benefit from playing on much better pitches, which at this stage RH isn't. Midfield as ever worked very hard but both Leonard and Hurst looked very tired. Timlin and Wilo still full of energy, not sure why Timo seems to be subbed first. Would like to have seen Laird start, although Conor seems ahead of him based on subs used. Defence did well against a physical County, Howe is always a handful. Phillips looked shaky most the game and was defo a penalty. Thompson looked far more comfortable at CB than he did at RB on Tuesday. Look so much better and balanced with both Coker and White in the side, although White probably could do with a bit more time off, defo holding his shoulder quite a bit. If fit might as well play O'neill. As for Straker, what can you say, the guy just doesn't do it for me, I don't believe we will go up if he is a regular in the side, his touch is awful and his awareness on the pitch both going forward and in defence is non existent. He misplaced so many passes and constantly ran the ball out if play, in addition offers little cover for either full back. Love the guys enthusiasm but needs to be benched and left there for emergency use only. Ref was woeful, played advantage well but other than that was soft. As others have said it was blatantly obvious that they came for a draw and to achieve this they resorted to the most blatant time wasting you will ever see, and it should have been dealt with as should two or three synical fouls that he left unpunished. As for NC I'm staggered that a team that attempts to play no football has taken four points off us. The keeper virtually every goal kick in the second half went straight through to Bentley, clueless. As for the County fan on here, please research before you comment. I doubt there is a team in this league that has had worse financial conditions to work under than us and we too have suffered injuries like most teams do.

in the end I was happy with a point as I was Tuesdsy, although our effort and commitment probably deserved 4 points from the games. But 1 league defeat in 14 I think and 8 points clear of 8th place leaves us in a strong position. A week off will do the team the world of good and a very winnable game next week. Still lots of positives to hold on to.

Yes , afraid I didn't do extensive research on Sarfend and it's financial position...guessing embargo imposed because of financial mismanagement in past or simply spending what you ain't got.

As for your astonishment that your lot have lost 4 points to us...and the standard or lack of football that County played...suggest you take your own advice and do some research...check out the comment by Sarfend fan who made the effort to go to Rodney Parade ( Super Kings 1108 am).
We have not had"injuries like other teams".....that Shrimper John , is my point...we have had the worst and most serious long term injuries that I have seen in all my yrs of watching footy...and that is a long , long time...since early seventies.

You are entitled to your opinion! But I wasn't the only one that thought you tactics were poor. At least we tried to play football instead of launching the ball 50 yards every time. Good luck for the rest of the season, you will need it watching that lot. End of.
