Southend v Liverpool 1979

Couldn't have been Scousers, must have been someone else, Millwall maybe.

Always the victims, never their fault.
They were DEFINATE scouses , PO and Dick had been talking to them during the game , it was after the game when they were walking back to there coach that the others two pulled the knives out and mugged them for there money they had , a typical Scouse trick ..

Yes, actually I was being sarcastic, scousers are well known for their quick wit and thiefing tendentices. Not nearly as nice as they think they are.

When the game got postponed I was distraught - my sixth form Geography class were due to go on a week's study trip to the Brecon Beacons on the Monday (what a tight-fisted college that was, mid Wales in a hostel in January). However, the Brecon trip got postponed and all was well again, went with me Dad , queued up for two hours outside the West and got in 20 mins late. What a night tho.

Took this still from the video of crowd safety measures on the night, ie a bloke with a megaphone telling folk to shift!

Today with SUEPA we have all of the 12 from that night as members bar Steve Yates and Mickey Stead, would love to get in touch with those two.

Yep, the coaches were all parked along the road adjacent to Stanley Park (Priory Road) and what a sight that was c60-70 full SUFC coaches, fantastic! But after the game what a commotion in Stanley Park and then chaos on Priory Road trying to find your specific coach. I got booted in the back of my leg but hobbled back to the coach to find a mate slumped on the rear seat, telling us he'd been attacked by some Liv fans. It did sour the night at Anfield a little but do I wish we had the chance again to go there again? And would I go? Yes and yes! And btw the Kop did actually chant for Southend before the game ended. Amazing and high praise indeed.

Pity most of the 30,000 didn't stick with the team. By the end of the season we had a league crowd of just 2,889 v Walsall.

Mind you the following season we had the 22,500 home crowd v West Ham which was pretty good for a league cup replay.

Crowds came back a bit for the 80/1 promotion season but after that they plummeted during the dark days of the 1980's.

Your right but those were the days of not many season ticket holders and dead rubbers were not well attended. I was at the Walsall game and if I remember right they were already relegated. Two old ladies with Walsall scarfs, hats and badges came in and stood behind the goal down the front of the North Bank....All the lads were polite to them and no one felt the need to run them out of our stand.

Went to the game at home v Liverpool and like so many others missed the KO.....Which spoilt the the night for me. Half my school seemed to be there and many of us thought with crowds like that we would be watching top flight football in just a few seasons....Instead we ended up watching games with less than 2,000 people ..Our Darkest Hour

It's funny seeing all the advertisement hoardings. Essex Cellulose, Access, Visionhire, BAF Southend Airline, Mister Byrites.......All gone.
Fyi I worked for Lloyds TSB (as was) in the credit card business based in Essex and Esplanande Houses as Finance Manager 98-2000. I got to see some interesting paperwork re the breakup/sale of Access. 'Your flexible friend' was set up as a joint venture between Lloyds, Nat West, Midland and RBS in 72 to rival Barclaycard. As the market for credit cards grew (massively) and the profits of each of the jv partners grew too they decided to go their own way, hence no more Access. Bit more to it than that but my lips are sealed!

Here is how I remember some of it.

Access JCCC was set up by Lloyds, Nat West, Midland and William & Glyns (later RBS) in 1972. Southend was chosen as a suitable location due to spare postal capacity. A single card product was offered by each bank (I'm not sure if it was affiliated to MasterCard when first launched). Access were mainly involved in the actual credit card embossing, processing of the credit card transactions and the merchant services.

Things trundled along fine until the Monopolies commission got involved in the mid/late 1990's. Access became Signet Ltd. And the card explosion in the UK happened it was now possible to get cards from all sorts of issuers. Signet were taken over by American company First Data and became FDR Ltd. FDR tried all sorts of markets taking over operations in Germany, Saudi Arabia and some other places I can't remember.
FDR even had a failed bid in 1999 for the Post Office counters IT system (a lucky escape as Fujitsu won the contract and implemented Horizon which has been the subject of many court cases since).

In the early 2000's FDR lost quite a few of the processing operations for some of the larger customers but managed to hang onto Lloyds Cardnet? It still had the offices near Basildon Mayflower retail park but moved a bit further along the A127 into new offices and recently changed names to FiServ. So Access JCCC still survives to this day, sort of. I have no idea what contracts FiServ currently have, I know they still have quite a large call centre operation.

As you say yes I think there were a few 'deals' along the way.

Went to both the 1979 games, the walk back to the coaches from Anfield through Stanley Park in the pitch black, was one of the most scariest times I have ever had supporting Southend.
I have never met a Southend fan that went to Liverpool in 1958. I used to know a few who went to Everton in 1955, but they didn't go to Liverpool in 58.

UpTheShrimpers, you're right. I also had Finance roles for FDR at Basildon and Priory Park (nostalgic location!), as well as HSBC Cards in Southend and RBS Global Merchant Services and Commercial Cards in the City, so one way or another spent some considerable time at constituent parts of the old and 'new Access' as it were. Mostly great times, worked with some really smart people. And some I'd much rather forget.

Wiggins Brickie? Did you work with world breaking Ralph?

Wiggins Brickie? Did you work with world breaking Ralph?

I was trained at the Wiggins college in Thundersley by Ralph....Not by Wiggins but a government scheme in about 1985 after Wiggins was no more.

Top man was Ralph and could lay over 700 bricks in an hour
