Spain takes measures to deal with rising oil prices

No because the article says that the government will reduce the prices on commuter trains. THAT would never happen. The cost for me to get into work with the drive, park and train is scandalous. The amount of trains is much less than they were 20 years back. People are now starting to stand at Rayleigh. This is daylight robbery and I'm sick of being held to ransom.

If the government were to try that here I suspect the protests would be widespread. I can't work out how the reduction in fuel tax benefits a government a well. Have I missed the bleeding obvious somewhere ?

Surely if people drive more slowly, less fuel will be used, thus cutting the amount of valuable reserves the Government has to spend on importing fuel in the first place?

No - if anyone wants to save money on fuel they already have the option to drive at a slower speed if they wish.

How much does the govenment spend per year on importing fuel? Isn't most of it imported by BP / Shell / Texaco etc?

No it isn't, it's capacity rising exponentially.

I'm working on a "fantasy" timetable where the peak period is doubled and runs all day, every day. Even then that probably won't be enough.

True, added to which the oil companies do all the research & development of oil & gas fields, and then export it.

Yes more people buy it so while you get less tax , over all you get more income as you sell more of teh product (its why those firms do VAT free purchases for instance )

All those bombs we dropped on Iraq didn't come cheap.
