Inspired by someone seemingly slagging off Jermaine McGlashan as a bad signing and not realising his value as a sub, what other Southend players were more effective as subs* than as starters?

*Used subs only, so D*ewe B*oughton doesn't count

Theo Robinson, seems to me a better weapon when coming off the bench. When I've seen him play 90 minutes he seems less effective.

Weird as this might sound, Daniel Bentley as a specialist penalty saver before he became famous.

I have to agree with you there. Along a similar line, I felt the same way about Wayne Gray.

Notably both him and McGlashan are pacey players, so if they come on at full fitness against tired defenders they can easily beat them in a race for the ball.

myles Weston.... his pace scared centre backs...

Anthony Straker - Specialism - confusing the opposition in to believing that sometimes he was a professional footballer and sometimes not.

Subs -only one per team till 87-88-were introduced in 65-66 but it was not till our first ever promotion year 71-72 that we really took advantage-our very young, speedy winger Peter Spud Taylor started just 7 games, but came on 12 times, scoring 3 himself and laying on many, many more for the likes of Garner and Best.

Now then, I am thinking of a player called Duffield - ran the channels very well (as does Mr Fortune by the way) but was more effective at getting behind the players once they were partially knackered.

He was before my time (at least as a player; I had the misfortune to endure his management spell!) but was one of the first names that came to mind.

Was he actually more effective as a sub or should he have started more games?

Laurie Dudfield. Can't remember thinking he was more effective as a sub but he certainly ran those channels well. I wonder if Andy Thomson would have been more effective if he'd have been used off the bench?

Actually...does anyone know who was our first ever substitute? I don't - I'm asking!
